Scientists found two main fossils of this animal. One was found in Germany in the 1850s. The other was found in France much later. The German fossil was a young dinosaur. It was about the size of a chicken.

The French fossil was larger.

Compsognathus was a theropod. This means it was a meat-eating dinosaur. We know this for sure. Fossils of small lizards were found in its belly. It had a long, narrow skull. It also had small, pointy teeth.

This dinosaur walked on two legs. It had long legs and a long tail. The tail helped it stay balanced while it moved. Its hands were small. They had two large claws. A third finger may have been too small to use. Some relatives had feathers. We do not know if Compsognathus had them.

Its name comes from Greek words meaning "dainty jaw." This animal was a theropod, which is a group of meat-eating dinosaurs.

It lived about 150 million years ago during the late Jurassic period. At that time, the land where it lived was part of a group of islands in Europe. Scientists believe it was a very active hunter. It is one of the few dinosaurs where we know exactly what it ate.

Inside the bellies of its fossils, scientists found the remains of small, quick lizards.

This dinosaur had a very specific way of moving. It was bipedal, which means it walked on two legs.

It had long legs to help it run. It also had a long tail to help it stay balanced while it moved. Its head was narrow with a long snout. The skull had five pairs of openings, called fenestrae, which helped make the bone lighter.

We know about this dinosaur because of two important fossils.

The first was found in Bavaria, Germany, in the 1850s. A man named Joseph Oberndorfer collected this fossil. He later gave it to a scientist named Johann A. Wagner. Wagner named the dinosaur in 1859. He did not think it was a dinosaur at first. He thought it was a curious kind of lizard. Later, the famous scientist Thomas Huxley studied it. He thought it looked like a bird-like reptile. This helped people realize that birds might have evolved from dinosaurs.

The second major fossil was found much later. It was discovered around 1971 near Nice, France.

This specimen was larger than the German one. For a long time, people thought it was a different species named Compsognathus corallestris. However, scientists later decided it was just another Compsognathus longipes. The German fossil was actually a juvenile, or a young dinosaur. That is why it was so small, about the size of a chicken.

The French fossil was larger and more grown-up. Some teeth found in a mine in Portugal might also belong to this group.

Thinking about Compsognathus helps us understand how dinosaurs lived. It was once called the smallest non-avian dinosaur. Non-avian means it was not a bird.

Since then, even smaller dinosaurs like Microraptor have been found. We also wonder what its skin looked like. Some of its relatives had simple feathers that looked like fur.

We have not found feathers on Compsognathus fossils yet. Some scientists found bumpy marks on its tail. These might have been scales or bony growths. It is a wonderful mystery that scientists are still studying today.

Compsognathus is a genus of small, bipedal, carnivorous theropod dinosaurs.

The name comes from the Greek words "kompsos," meaning elegant or dainty, and "gnathos," meaning jaw. These dinosaurs lived approximately 150 million years ago. This was during the Tithonian age of the late Jurassic period. At that time, the region where they lived was part of the Solnhofen archipelago in Europe.

Understanding Compsognathus is vital because it was the first theropod dinosaur known from a reasonably complete skeleton. It has also played a major role in how we understand the relationship between dinosaurs and birds.

As a theropod, Compsognathus was a meat-eater that moved on two legs.

It possessed long legs for running and a long tail to provide balance during locomotion. Its forelimbs were notably smaller than its hindlimbs. The hands featured two large, clawed digits. A third digit was present but may have been a reduced, non-functional part of the hand. The skull was narrow and long with a tapered snout. It contained five pairs of fenestrae, which are openings in the skull. The largest of these openings was the orbit, or eye socket. This gave the animal relatively large eyes in proportion to its skull.

Compsognathus is unique because we know its diet with great certainty.

In the bellies of both major fossil specimens, scientists found the remains of small, agile lizards. This confirms they were active hunters of small vertebrates. Their teeth were specialized for this task. The teeth were small and pointed. Most teeth had fine serrations, or saw-like edges, on their rear sides to help grip prey. Interestingly, the tooth crowns of compsognathids curved backward at two-thirds of their height. The mid-parts of the crowns remained straight, and the bases were expanded.

Our knowledge of this genus comes from two primary fossil specimens.

The first was found in Bavaria, Germany, during the 1850s. Joseph Oberndorfer acquired this fossil and lent it to the paleontologist Johann A. Wagner. Wagner published a discussion in 1859 and coined the name Compsognathus longipes. He did not initially realize it was a dinosaur, calling it a curious form of lizard. The second specimen was discovered much later, around 1971, near Nice, France. This French specimen was larger and led some to believe it was a different species called Compsognathus corallestris. However, researchers later determined it was actually a larger adult of the same species.

For a long time, the German specimen led scientists to believe Compsognathus was only the size of a chicken.

We now know this was because the German specimen was a juvenile, or an immature individual. The larger French specimen provides a better idea of the adult size. The German specimen had a hip height of about 20 centimeters. The French specimen was larger, with a hip height of approximately 30 centimeters. In terms of weight, the German juvenile was quite light. The larger French adult weighed significantly more. These measurements help paleontologists compare Compsognathus to other dinosaurs like Sinosauropteryx.

History shows how our understanding of this animal has shifted over time.

In the late 1800s, Thomas Huxley compared Compsognathus to Archaeopteryx, which was thought to be the earliest bird. Huxley referred to Compsognathus as a "bird-like reptile." This helped establish the theory that birds evolved from dinosaurs. Until the 1990s, it was considered the smallest known non-avialan dinosaur. Non-avialan refers to dinosaurs that were not part of the bird lineage. Later discoveries, such as Microraptor, eventually surpassed it in small size.

One of the great mysteries remains the appearance of its skin, or integument.

While relatives like Sinosauropteryx show evidence of simple, fur-like feathers, no feathers have been preserved on Compsognathus. Some researchers found bumpy marks on the tail that might be scales. Others suggest these might be bony growths rather than skin structures. There were also reports of scales on the abdomen, though some scientists believe these were actually corpse wax. Whether Compsognathus was feathered or scaly is a question that continues to connect this dinosaur to the broader study of dinosaur evolution and biology.
