The American scientist Othniel Charles Marsh described the animal in 1884. He named the first species Ceratosaurus nasicornis. The bones were found in hard sandstone, which squeezed and changed their shape. This specimen was sent to the Peabody Museum of Natural History for study. Later, it moved to the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.

Many different fossils have helped us understand this animal over time. In 1961, James Madsen found a large specimen in Utah.

In 1976, Thor Erikson found another specimen near Fruita, Colorado. Some scientists once thought these were different species named C. dentisulcatus and C. magnicornis. Now, most experts believe they were just different ages of the same dinosaur. For example, a specimen found in Wyoming in 1996 was a juvenile. It was about 34% smaller than the original Colorado skeleton.

While Othniel Charles Marsh once thought the nasal horn was a weapon, many now believe it was used for display.

Scientists have identified several specimens that helped define the genus. The type species is Ceratosaurus nasicornis. In 2000, two other species were described: Ceratosaurus dentisulcatus and Ceratosaurus magnicornis. These were based on fragmentary skeletons from Utah and Colorado.

However, most paleontologists no longer accept these as separate species. They believe these fossils actually represent different growth stages of C. nasicornis. This concept is known as ontogenetic variation. This means the differences in bone structure were caused by the animal's age rather than different species.

The history of its discovery began in the 1880s. A farmer named Marshall Parker Felch discovered the first nearly complete skeleton. This happened in 1883 and 1884 in Garden Park, Colorado. The bones were found in the Morrison Formation.

The specimen was encased in hard sandstone. This pressure caused the skull and spine to become heavily distorted during fossilization. American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh described the genus in 1884. The specimen was later moved to the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. It underwent extensive preparation between 1911 and 1918.

Early scientific reconstructions of Ceratosaurus contained several errors. In 1892, Marsh published a drawing that made the animal look too long. He included at least six extra dorsal vertebrae in the spine.

Early artists also depicted the dinosaur in an upright posture. They often showed the tail dragging on the ground. This changed when Charles Gilmore studied the thigh bones in 1910. He noticed the bones were angled against the lower leg. This led to a more accurate model of a horizontal, running animal.

Ceratosaurus lived in a crowded ecosystem with other large predators. It shared its habitat with Torvosaurus and Allosaurus. To survive, these animals likely occupied different ecological niches. This helped reduce competition for food resources.

While some once thought it hunted fish, recent studies reject the idea of aquatic prey. Instead, it likely preyed upon various plant-eating dinosaurs. The size of these animals varied significantly. The original specimen was estimated to be 9 meters long. The C. dentisulcatus specimen was even larger at approximately 10 meters.

New discoveries continue to refine our knowledge of this genus. In 1996, a juvenile specimen was found in Wyoming. This individual was 34% smaller than the original Colorado holotype. In 2024, a separate juvenile specimen was sold at auction for $30,510,000. These finds help scientists understand how Ceratosaurus grew from a small juvenile to a large adult. Each new fossil provides a piece of the biological puzzle. This allows researchers to better understand the life cycles of Jurassic predators.
