Scientists call it an early sauropodomorph, which means it was a relative of the giant, long-necked dinosaurs. Because so many fossils were found in the Swabia region of Germany, people gave it a special nickname. They called it the Schwäbischer Lindwurm, or the Swabian lindworm. This name makes the dinosaur sound like a legendary dragon from local stories.

This dinosaur had a very interesting way of moving and eating.

A physician named Johann Friedrich Engelhardt first found some bones in 1834. Three years later, a scientist named Hermann von Meyer described them as a new genus. Even though it was found early, it was not part of the first group of dinosaurs named by Richard Owen in 1842. At that time, it was still too poorly understood to be called a dinosaur. Today, it is one of the best-known dinosaurs in all of science.

There are many important places where these fossils were discovered.

Over 100 skeletons have been found in places like Germany, Switzerland, and France. In Germany, large groups of fossils were found in the Neckar and Pegnitz river valleys. Between 1910 and 1930, workers in a clay pit in Saxony-Anhalt found up to 50 skeletons. Some of these bones were kept in Berlin, but many were lost during World War II. Other important finds happened in Trossingen, Germany, and Frick, Switzerland.

The species P. trossingensis is the type species. Previously, P. engelhardti was considered the type species. However, the ICZN ruled that P. engelhardti was undiagnostic. This means it was too similar to other dinosaurs to be unique. There is still no broad consensus on the taxonomy of all plateosaurids. Taxonomy is the science of naming and classifying organisms. Many other names have been used in the past as synonyms. Synonyms are extra names that actually belong to the same animal.

The history of discovering Plateosaurus is quite long. Johann Friedrich Engelhardt found the first bones in 1834. These were vertebrae and leg bones found at Heroldsberg, Germany.

Hermann von Meyer described the new genus three years later. Even though it was found early, it was not in Richard Owen's original list of dinosaurs. Owen named the group Dinosauria in 1842. At that time, Plateosaurus was too poorly known to be identified as a dinosaur. Today, it is one of the most well-known dinosaurs in science. Over 100 skeletons have been found by researchers.

Many different locations have provided important fossil evidence. Most finds are in Germany, Switzerland, and France.

In Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, excavations found between 39 and 50 skeletons. These were found in a clay pit between 1910 and 1930. Sadly, much of the material in Berlin was destroyed during World War II. Another major site is Trossingen in Germany. Between 1911 and 1932, researchers found 35 complete or partial skeletons there. The abundance of fossils in Swabia earned it the nickname Schwäbischer Lindwurm. This translates to Swabian lindworm or Swabian dragon.

Even a North Sea oil drill found a limb bone fragment in 1997.

Plateosaurus fossils tell us about the life and death of these animals. Most individuals lived for at least 12 to 20 years. We do not know their maximum life span. Scientists also study taphonomy to understand how they became fossils. Taphonomy is the study of how organisms decay and become embedded in rock.

Researchers also look at biomechanics to see how the skeletons worked. This helps us understand their posture and how they moved. For a long time, Plateosaurus was misunderstood by the public. Since 1980, new studies in palaeobiology have changed our views. Palaeobiology is the study of the life circumstances of ancient animals.

Understanding Plateosaurus connects us to the wider history of life. It shows how the first large herbivores began to evolve. By studying its bone microstructure, scientists learn about growth.
