Theropods are a famous group of dinosaurs.
Not all theropods ate meat. Some groups changed to eat plants. Others ate seeds or insects. Some even caught fish. 
Theropods came in many sizes. The *Tyrannosaurus* was a very famous giant. Other giants like *Spinosaurus* were even longer. But some theropods were very small. The bee hummingbird is a living theropod.

How did these animals live and move? Most theropods had hollow bones to stay light. They also had three toes and claws on each limb. Many theropods were carnivores, which means they ate meat. We know this because their teeth were often sharp and serrated. Some fossils even show meals inside their stomachs.
Scientists have learned a lot about them over time. In the 19th and 20th centuries, researchers found many sharp-toothed fossils. They originally thought most theropods only ate meat. However, new finds changed this idea. They discovered the therizinosaurs, which were actually plant-eaters. These dinosaurs had large bodies for processing plants. They also had small heads with beaks. Other groups evolved to eat seeds, insects, or even fish. 
Theropods also had very different skin. Some were covered in feathers or feather-like filaments. 
These animals came in many different sizes. The *Tyrannosaurus* is a very famous giant. But other giants like *Spinosaurus* were even longer. *Spinosaurus* might have been 3 meters longer than *Tyrannosaurus*. On the other hand, some were very tiny. The *Anchiornis huxleyi* was only 34 centimeters long. Today, the smallest theropod is the bee hummingbird. 
Theropoda is a major clade of dinosaurs that includes some of the most famous animals in history. The name comes from ancient Greek words meaning "wild beast foot." This group is one of three primary dinosaur clades, alongside Ornithischia and Sauropodomorpha. 
Physically, theropods share several specific biological traits. Most members of the group, particularly Neotheropoda, possess hollow bones and tridactyl feet. Tridactyl means they have three toes that leave distinct footprints on the ground. During their evolution, the fifth digit was reduced to a remnant and disappeared by the late Triassic. They also lack a fifth digit on their hands. Many theropods developed a furcula, which is commonly known as a wishbone. Their skeletons also feature a well-developed ball and socket joint near the head and neck. These physical adaptations helped them move and survive in various environments.
Theropods exhibit an amazing variety of diets and tooth shapes. While they were ancestrally carnivorous, many groups evolved to eat other things. Early fossils from the 19th and 20th centuries mostly showed sharp, serrated teeth used for cutting meat. For example, a *Compsognathus longipes* fossil contained a lizard in its stomach.
Many theropod teeth were ziphodont, meaning they were blade-like with serrated edges. Some teeth were also pachydont or folidont, depending on their specific shape. A 2015 study found that tiny folds in the teeth acted as structural supports. These folds prevented the serrations from breaking when the animal bit down hard. This was especially important as theropods evolved into massive predators with immense bite forces. Some species, such as *Baryonyx*, even used gastroliths, or gizzard-stones, to help process their food.
Skin texture and coverings in theropods were also very diverse. The subgroup Coelurosauria likely possessed feathers or feather-like filaments. 

Theropods reached incredible extremes in physical size. The group included the largest terrestrial carnivores to ever live, such as *Tyrannosaurus* and *Giganotosaurus*. While *Tyrannosaurus* is very famous, *Spinosaurus* was likely even longer, potentially by 3 meters. 

Theropods first appeared during the Carnian age of the Late Triassic, about 231.4 million years ago. They remained a dominant force through the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Scientists believe their body size may have shrunk continuously over 50 million years. This shrinking process eventually led to the evolution of the 11,000 bird species we see today. This connection shows how a group of "wild beasts" transformed into the birds in our backyards. The history of theropods is a story of incredible adaptation and survival.
