The formation of natural bitumen is a slow process involving organic matter. It began during the Carboniferous period when giant swamp forests covered much of the Earth. Tiny living things, such as microscopic algae called diatoms, died and sank to the bottom of oceans or lakes.

Bitumen has a complex chemical makeup consisting of four main classes of compounds. These include naphthene aromatics, which are partially hydrogenated polycyclic aromatic compounds. It also contains polar aromatics, which are high molecular weight phenols and carboxylic acids. Saturated hydrocarbons are also present, and their percentage affects the softening point of the material. Finally, asphaltenes are high molecular weight phenols and heterocyclic compounds.

Elementally, bitumen is typically 80% carbon and 10% hydrogen by weight. It also contains up to 6% sulfur and small amounts of nickel and vanadium.

There are several distinct types and terms used to describe bitumen. Crude bitumen refers to the naturally occurring version found in the ground. Refined bitumen is the material obtained from the fractional distillation of crude oil. In Canada, the term bitumen is used for extremely heavy crude oil found in the oil sands. There is also "dilbit," which is bitumen diluted with naphtha to help it flow through pipelines. Another term is "syncrude," which is bitumen that has been upgraded to synthetic crude oil.

History shows that humans have used this material for thousands of years. The word "asphalt" comes from the Greek word *asphaltos*, which means bitumen or pitch.
