Limestone also plays a major role in shaping the Earth's surface. Because limestone is slightly soluble in rainwater, it can erode into unique landscapes called karst. Most of the world's cave systems are found in limestone bedrock. While limestone is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2 to 4, dense varieties are quite strong. Dense limestone can have a crushing strength of up to 180 MPa. This is much higher than the 40 MPa strength typically found in concrete.
