Their skulls were tall and short with a domed top. They likely had long, hanging trunks just like modern elephants. Their teeth had four or five ridges on them to help them chew. 
Scientists first learned about these animals through fossils. In 1828, Jean-Baptiste Croizet and Antoine Claude Gabriel Jobert named one species. They called it Mastodon arvernensis. They found these remains near a volcano in central southern France. The name comes from the Auvergne region where they were found. Later, in 1855, Auguste Aymard gave the group the name Anancus. This name comes from Latin words. It means "not curved" to describe those straight tusks. 
Different types of Anancus ate different things. Some were browsers. This means they ate twigs, bark, seeds, and fruit. Anancus arvernensis in Europe likely lived this way. Other species were grazers. These animals ate mostly grass. Some species in East Africa were mixed feeders. They ate both grass and plants like twigs. 
Anancus lived alongside many other animals. In Europe, they shared the land with a large mastodon called Mammut borsoni. They also lived near early mammoths and other elephant relatives. Other species, such as Anancus osiris in North Africa, were mixed feeders. These animals consumed both grass and browsing materials. This dietary variety allowed them to spread across different continents. 
The movement of Anancus across the globe followed a specific timeline. They first appeared in Pakistan around 8.5 million years ago. They entered Europe approximately 7.2 million years ago. Around 7 million years ago, they dispersed into Africa. They also reached China around 6 million years ago. Most Anancus species disappeared from Asia and Africa by the end of the Pliocene. This happened about 2.6 million years ago. 
Extinction patterns for Anancus were driven by competition and environment. In Africa, the genus likely faced competitive exclusion. This happens when one species outcompetes another for resources. Elephantids moved into these areas with more efficient molar teeth. These teeth were better at processing large amounts of grass. This made it difficult for Anancus to survive. The European species, Anancus arvernensis, was the last to survive. They lived until the Early Pleistocene. Their final records appear in the Netherlands around 1.6 million years ago. 
Anancus lived in a complex world of diverse megafauna. In Pliocene Europe, they coexisted with the larger mastodon Mammut borsoni. They also shared habitats with early mammoths like Mammuthus meridionalis. In Africa, they lived alongside Loxodonta cookei. Anancus managed to survive alongside these relatives through niche partitioning. This means they used different parts of the habitat or ate different foods to avoid direct conflict. This complex system of living together helped many species thrive for millions of years.
