He found many bones in the gypsum quarries of Montmartre in Paris, France. In 1807, he found two incomplete skeletons. These bones helped him understand how the animals were built. He even made drawings of what they looked like in 1812. These drawings were some of the first to use real fossil evidence. His work helped start new ways of studying history.

There are four known species of Anoplotherium. One was called Anoplotherium commune.

This species was about the size of a sheep. Its name means "common" because its fossils are found often. Other species were smaller, like Anoplotherium medium and Anoplotherium minus. The name Anoplotherium itself means "unarmed beast." This comes from Greek words meaning "not" and "armor."

Scientists have identified four known species of Anoplotherium. The most common was Anoplotherium commune. This species was roughly the size of a sheep. Its name refers to how frequently its fossils are found. Other species were smaller, such as Anoplotherium medium and Anoplotherium minus.

There is also Anoplotherium latipes. This species is notable because it had three toes on its feet. In contrast, A. commune appeared to have two toes. Some researchers suggest these differences might be sexual dimorphism. This means the two-toed and three-toed versions might be males and females of the same species. However, this idea is still speculative.

Anoplotherium had several specialized physical features. It possessed a very long and robust tail. The tail was supported by strong vertebrae in the lower back.

For a long time, scientists disagreed about how Anoplotherium lived. In the 19th century, many thought they were semi-aquatic. They believed the animals swam in marshes to eat aquatic plants. This theory was based on comparisons to otters or hippopotamuses.

However, this idea changed in 1938. Researchers rejected the aquatic theory because of anatomical differences. Modern studies suggest they were terrestrial browsers. This means they lived on land and ate land plants. Some researchers even compare their tail patterns to those of kangaroos. This helps us picture them as land-dwelling animals with specialized movements.

The success of Anoplotherium ended abruptly. This happened during the Grande Coupure. This was a major extinction and faunal turnover event. It occurred during the earliest Oligocene. The climate began to shift toward more glaciation and seasonality.

Tropical and subtropical forests were replaced by temperate environments. At the same time, ocean barriers between Europe and Asia closed. This allowed many new animals from Asia to move into Europe. Anoplotherium likely could not adapt to these rapid changes. As a result, the genus went extinct. Their fossils remain a vital part of our understanding of Earth's history.
