There are different scientific theories regarding where anthracotheres fit in the tree of life. While many see them as stem hippos, other analyses suggest different connections. One study proposes that anthracotheres are part of a clade that includes entelodonts. This group would be a sister clade to other cetancodonts. In this theory, a genus called Siamotherium is considered the most basal member of the Cetacodontamorpha clade. These complex relationships show how much work remains to fully resolve the history of these extinct mammals.
