After Sun Ce died in the year 200, his brother Sun Quan took over. Zhou Yu stayed to help Sun Quan lead the lands. A powerful leader named Cao Cao wanted Sun Quan to obey him. Cao Cao demanded that Sun Quan send a son to be a hostage. Zhou Yu gave Sun Quan very wise advice during this hard time. He told Sun Quan not to send a hostage to the enemy. He said they should stay strong and wait for the right moment.
In the year 208, a massive war began. Cao Cao sent a huge army of 800,000 naval troops to the south. Many people were very afraid of this giant force. However, Zhou Yu was not afraid to fight for his land. He played a leading role in the famous Battle of Red Cliffs.
Zhou Yu's life was full of great victories and hard work. He died in the year 210 at the age of 35. He was preparing to lead an invasion of Yi Province when he passed away. Later, people wrote about him in a famous book called the *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*. In that story, he is shown as a brilliant but jealous man. Even in stories, people remember him as a very important figure in history.
Zhou Yu (175–210) was a prominent military general during the late Eastern Han dynasty in China.
Zhou Yu was born into a family with significant political influence. He came from Shu County in the Lujiang Commandery, which is located in modern-day Anhui province. His family held high-ranking positions within the Han central government. His great-uncle, Zhou Jing, and his cousin, Zhou Zhong, both served as the grand commandant. This was the highest military official position in the empire. Additionally, his father, Zhou Yi, served as a prefect in the imperial capital of Luoyang. This background likely provided him with an early understanding of administration and military structure.
His career was defined by his close relationship with Sun Ce, the son of Sun Jian. The two men were born in the same year and formed a bond that went beyond mere politics. Some historical accounts suggest that Zhou Yu sought out Sun Ce because of his growing reputation. Once they met, they became inseparable allies. Zhou Yu even treated Sun Ce's mother, Lady Wu, with the respect due to his own mother. This loyalty proved vital when Sun Ce began his military campaigns to conquer the Jiangdong region. Zhou Yu provided troops and supplies that helped Sun Ce expand his territory across many commanderies.
In 198, Sun Ce officially appointed Zhou Yu as the General of the Household Who Establishes Might. At only 23 years old, he was given command of 2,000 troops and 50 horses. Because of his youth and talent, the people of Wu nicknamed him "Zhou Lang," or "Zhou the youth." He served Sun Ce through several successful invasions. He helped conquer territories including Jing Province, Wan, and various commanderies like Yuzhang and Luling. These victories helped the Sun family consolidate their control over the southern lands.
Following the assassination of Sun Ce in 200, Zhou Yu transitioned to serving Sun Ce's younger brother, Sun Quan. This was a period of great instability. The powerful warlord Cao Cao was successfully unifying northern China and began pressuring the south. In 202, Cao Cao demanded that Sun Quan send a son to the capital, Xu, to serve as a hostage. This was a common tactic to ensure the loyalty of a rival. Zhou Yu strongly advised against this. He argued that Sun Quan already possessed great resources, including copper for coins and salt from the sea. He warned that sending a hostage would turn Sun Quan into a mere vassal of the Cao family.
Zhou Yu's most significant military contributions occurred during the massive conflict with Cao Cao in 208. Cao Cao had recently acquired the naval troops and land of Jing Province after its governor surrendered. Cao Cao claimed to have 800,000 naval troops ready to invade the south. While many of Sun Quan's subjects were terrified and suggested surrender, Zhou Yu remained resolute. He played a leading role in the decisive Battle of Red Cliffs in late 208.
Despite his many achievements, Zhou Yu's life was relatively short. He died in 210 at the age of 35. At the time of his death, he was preparing for a planned invasion of Yi Province. His passing meant he never lived to see Sun Quan officially take the throne. His legacy was later captured in the 14th-century novel, *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*. This book shaped his popular image as a dashing and brilliant commander. However, the novel also portrays him as a man prone to jealousy, specifically regarding his rival, Zhuge Liang. Regardless of these literary interpretations, history recognizes him as a vital architect of the southern states.
