After this victory, Yue became much stronger. They even made an alliance with a land called Jin.

As time went on, Yue reached its highest point in 404 BC. During this year, Yue and Jin worked together to invade Qi and Lu. This made Yue a very dominant power in the region. However, this strength did not last forever. In 333 BC, the state of Chu and the state of Qi joined forces. They partitioned the land, which means they divided it up. This led to the end of Yue as a single state. Later, the ruling family moved south to start the Minyue kingdom. This new kingdom lasted until about 150 BC.

Even though the state ended, the name Yue is still used today. You can find the name in the stars. Two stars are named after Yue in Chinese astronomy. The name is also used in science. There is a group of viruses called Yueviridae.

One famous example is the sword belonging to King Goujian. Another notable example is the sword of Zhougou. Their ability to craft such durable and precise metal tools set them apart from many other contemporary powers. This skill likely contributed to their success in many regional conflicts.

The history of Yue is marked by long wars and major shifts in power. In the late 6th century BC, Yue began a series of wars against its northern neighbor, Wu. This conflict lasted for several decades. King Goujian was a central figure during this era. In 473 BC, Goujian successfully conquered and annexed the state of Wu.

After this victory, Yue moved its court north to the city of Wu, which is modern-day Suzhou. This expansion allowed Yue to inherit Wu's good relations with the state of Jin.

At its highest point in 404 BC, Yue was a dominant power. During this time, Yue and Jin invaded the states of Qi and Lu. The state of Qi even built the Long Wall to prevent future Yue attacks from the south. After these conflicts, Qi ceded territory to Yue. The state of Yue remained powerful until 333 BC. During the reign of Wuqiang, the state was partitioned by the states of Chu and Qi.

This division effectively ended Yue as a single, unified state.

The legacy of Yue continued even after its fall. The ruling family moved south to northern Fujian. There, they established the Minyue kingdom, which lasted until about 150 BC. Some descendants of the Yue rulers took on specific surnames. These included the names Ou, Ouyang, and Ouhou, used to remember their history. Even much later, in 172 CE, a leader named Xu Chang tried to restore the state of Yue during a rebellion against the Han dynasty. Although the rebellion was crushed, it shows how the idea of Yue remained in the people's minds.

Today, the name Yue appears in many different fields. In Chinese astronomy, two stars are named after Yue. One is Zeta Aquilae, and the other is Psi Capricorni. In biology, the name is used for the virus family Yueviridae and the genus Yuyuevirus.
