Zakir Husain was a very important leader and teacher in India. He spent his life helping people learn and working for his country.

Husain believed that education could help bring people together. In 1920, he helped found a university called Jamia Millia Islamia. This school started because of the Non-cooperation movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. The university wanted to teach students to be good Indian citizens. It also wanted to combine Islamic thought with Hindu ideas. Husain became the vice-chancellor of this school when he was only 29 years old. He led the university from 1926 until 1948. He even traveled across India to find money to keep the school running.
In 1937, Husain led a special committee for education. This committee created a new plan called Nai Talim. This name means "New Education" in Urdu. The plan wanted to make school free and compulsory for all children. It also suggested that children should learn in their own first language. Students could also learn useful skills like music, drawing, and crafts. Husain helped lead the group that put these ideas into action. He wanted every child to have a chance to blossom through learning.
After many years of teaching, Husain began to work in the government. He served as the Governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962. Then, he was elected as the Vice President of India in 1962.

Husain was a busy man who wrote many books for children. He also translated books into the Urdu language. He served as President until he died in office on May 3, 1969. Because he died while serving, he had the shortest time as president of any Indian leader. Today, many people in India remember his hard work. They have named roads, libraries, and even a huge rose garden after him. His resting place is located on the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi.
Zakir Husain was a prominent Indian educationist and statesman. He served as the President of India from May 13, 1967, until his death.
Husain was born in 1897 in Hyderabad to an Afridi Pashtun family. His father, Fida Husain Khan, was a successful lawyer in the Deccan region. After his father died in 1907, the family moved to Qaimganj. Husain received early instruction in the Quran, Persian, and Urdu. He later studied at the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh. He also attended the University of Berlin in Germany. There, he earned a doctoral degree in economics. His thesis focused on the agrarian structure in British India.
In 1920, Mahatma Gandhi urged non-cooperation with the British Raj. This movement led to the creation of an independent national university. This institution was later renamed Jamia Millia Islamia. Husain was a founding member of this university. He became its vice-chancellor at the young age of 29. He held this position from 1926 until 1948. The university aimed to train youth as Indian citizens. It also sought to coordinate Islamic thought with Hindu identity.
To keep Jamia Millia Islamia running, Husain traveled across India to find funds. He received support from figures like Mahatma Gandhi and the Nizam of Hyderabad. In 1928, he became the secretary of the National Education Society. This society managed the university's affairs. The university's constitution stated it would treat all religions impartially. It also pledged not to accept help from the colonial administration. Husain worked hard to ensure the school remained a national institution. This was especially important following the Partition of India in 1947.
In 1937, Husain chaired the Basic National Education Committee. This committee created a policy known as Nai Talim. In Urdu, Nai Talim means "New Education." The policy proposed seven years of free and compulsory education. It emphasized teaching in a student's mother tongue. The scheme also included learning crafts, music, and drawing. Husain helped lead the Hindustani Talimi Sangh to implement these ideas. This organization worked under the overall supervision of Mahatma Gandhi.
Husain's political career grew alongside his work in education. He was a nominated member of the Indian Parliament from 1952 to 1957. He also served as the Governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962. In 1963, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna. This is one of India's highest honors.
During times of political tension, Husain acted as a voice for peace. In 1946, he addressed leaders at Jamia's silver jubilee. He spoke about the "fire of hatred" spreading through the land. He urged political leaders to protect the foundations of civilized life. He wanted to ensure that the "innocent buds" of children could blossom. Even when the Muslim League vetoed his inclusion in the Interim Government, he remained a bridge-builder. He successfully convinced Muhammad Ali Jinnah to attend the university's celebration.
Husain's legacy continues through many different channels. He was a prolific writer and translated many books into Urdu. He also wrote many books specifically for children. India has commemorated him with postage stamps and many public works. Large rose gardens, roads, and libraries bear his name. His mazar, or tomb, is located on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus.
