Yi was born in 1545 in Hanseong, which is modern-day Seoul.
His path to becoming an admiral was not easy. In 1576, he took a military examination. He was a very skilled archer. However, he failed his first attempt because he broke a leg during the cavalry section. He tried again and eventually passed. Later, he served in the Northern Frontier Army. There, he fought against Jurchen marauders. In 1583, he successfully captured their chief, Mu Pai Nai. Despite these wins, jealous superiors falsely accused him of desertion. He was stripped of his rank and even imprisoned and tortured. He eventually returned to service as an enlisted soldier.
Despite these setbacks, Yi rose to high command again. He was appointed Commander of the Left Jeolla Naval District in 1591. He used this time to prepare for the coming war. He built up the regional navy and improved its strength. This preparation was vital when the Japanese invasion began in 1592. While the Japanese army moved quickly toward Seoul, Yi's navy fought to stop them at sea. He led several successful campaigns in the first months of the war. He won battles at Okpo and Sacheon. In the Battle of Okpo, his fleet destroyed many Japanese ships without losing a single Korean ship.
Admiral Yi's record in battle is truly remarkable. It is generally accepted that he fought in at least 23 naval battles. He won every single one of them. One of his most famous victories was the Battle of Myeongnyang. In this battle, he led only 13 Korean ships. He used them to defeat a Japanese fleet of at least 133 ships. This victory showed his incredible strategic vision. He also led the fleet during the Battle of Hansan Island. His ability to manage large-scale naval operations remains a subject of study today.
