The Imjin War was a major conflict in East Asia during the late 16th century. It consisted of two distinct Japanese invasions of the Korean Peninsula. The first invasion began in 1592 and is known as the Imjin War. This was followed by a brief truce in 1596. The second invasion occurred in 1597 and is called the Chŏngyu War. The conflict finally ended in 1598. This conclusion came after a military stalemate forced Japanese forces to withdraw.

The war was driven by the ambitions of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He was a powerful leader who had unified Japan. Hideyoshi wanted to conquer the Joseon dynasty in Korea. His ultimate goal was to invade Ming China. He sought to claim the role of the center of East Asia. Traditionally, China held this position through a tributary system. In this system, neighboring states paid tribute to China to maintain trade. Hideyoshi hoped to replace China as the dominant power in the region.

Japanese military technology played a significant role in the early fighting. Many Japanese soldiers were equipped with tanegashima. These were matchlock muskets, which are early firearms using a lit wick to fire. About one quarter of the Japanese soldiers used these weapons. They utilized a devastating volley system to fire many guns at once. This tactic was developed during the Sengoku period in Japan.

Resistance to the invasion came from several different sources. The Joseon government received vital military assistance from Ming China. Korean war minister Yi Hang-bok argued that Chinese help was necessary for survival. Additionally, the Joseon Navy played a decisive role in the conflict. Admiral Yi Sun-sin led the Korean naval forces to great victories. He used specialized ships, such as the turtle ship, to disrupt Japanese supply fleets.

These naval successes prevented the Japanese from successfully supplying their land armies.

Local resistance also helped frustrate the Japanese military. Civilian militias known as righteous armies appeared in 1592. These groups engaged in guerrilla warfare against the occupying forces. They attacked Japanese rule across the eight provinces of Korea. This local fighting was a major factor in stopping Japan from fully subjugating the region. The combination of Chinese reinforcements, naval victories, and local militias created a military stalemate. Neither side could gain significant new territory for a long period.

The second phase of the war mirrored the first. Japan renewed its offensive in 1597. Japanese land forces again captured several cities and fortresses. However, they were eventually pushed back to coastal castles called wajō. These fortifications were located along the southern coastline. The Ming and Joseon forces attempted to push them out, but a stalemate occurred. This second period of heavy fighting lasted for ten months. During this time, the Japanese forces were increasingly isolated in their coastal positions.

The war reached its final stage following the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A new governing body called the Council of Five Elders ordered the Japanese withdrawal. The last major engagement was the Battle of Noryang in 1598. This was the largest battle of the war. A combined fleet, consisting mostly of Chinese ships, fought the Japanese navy. The battle resulted in a crushing defeat for the Japanese. They lost approximately half of their navy in this single engagement.

The Imjin War had a massive impact on East Asian history. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers were killed during the seven years of fighting. Millions of resources were spent on the conflict. After the fighting stopped, peace negotiations continued for several years. These talks eventually led to the normalization of relations between the involved nations. The war demonstrated the shifting power dynamics between Japan, Korea, and China during this era.
