The area was originally inhabited by members of the Nipmuc tribe. They called the region Quinsigamond.
Worcester played a significant role in the American Revolution. On September 6, 1774, 4,622 militiamen from 37 towns assembled in the city. They marched on Main Street to shut down the Crown's court. This event is known as the Worcester Revolution or the Worcester Revolt. The militiamen successfully seized the courthouse and prevented royal officials from sitting. This was a major event because British authority was effectively overthrown in the colonies for the first time.
In the 19th century, Worcester transformed into a powerful industrial center. This growth was driven by the Blackstone Canal and various railways. These transportation routes allowed the city to import raw materials easily. They also helped export finished goods like machines, textiles, and wire.
The mid-20th century brought difficult changes to the city. After World War II, manufacturing began to wane. This led to economic decline and a drop in the population. Between 1950 and 1980, the population decreased by over 20 percent. In 1953, a powerful F4 tornado struck Worcester County. This was the deadliest tornado in Massachusetts history, killing 94 people.
Starting in the 1990s, Worcester began a period of urban renewal. The economy shifted toward higher education, medicine, and biotechnology. This shift helped the population grow by 28 percent since 1980. Today, the city is a center for medical research. The Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park is a key part of this new economy. Large employers include Saint Vincent Hospital and UMass Memorial Health Care.
Education is a vital part of modern Worcester. The city is home to eight different colleges and universities.
Modern Worcester is also defined by its great diversity. A large portion of the population is made up of immigrants. In fact, 22 percent of the population was born outside the United States.
