During the American Revolution, Queens played a role in the conflict. The area remained under British occupation after the Battle of Long Island in 1776. British soldiers used the public inns and empty buildings of residents as barracks. This happened under the Quartering Act. This practice was later addressed by the Third Amendment to the United States Constitution. During this time, the spy Nathan Hale was captured at Flushing Bay. The British also destroyed the courthouse in Jamaica to use the materials for barracks.

This process combined several towns like Long Island City, Newtown, Flushing, and Jamaica. By 1899, the boundaries of Queens County and the Borough of Queens became the same. Transportation improvements helped the area grow. The Long Island Rail Road was electrified between 1905 and 1908. The Queensboro Bridge opened in 1909. Railway tunnels under the East River were completed in 1910. The expansion of the New York City Subway system helped the population double between 1920 and 1930.
