Huntsville is a large and busy city in northern Alabama.

The city's history began a long time ago in the early 1800s. A pioneer named John Hunt arrived in 1805. At first, a man named LeRoy Pope named the area Twickenham. The streets were planned around a place called Big Spring. In 1811, the name was changed to Huntsville to honor John Hunt. Huntsville even served as the very first capital of Alabama for one year. This happened in 1819 after the state was admitted to the Union. Later, the capital moved to other cities like Tuscaloosa and Montgomery.
For many years, the economy relied on farming and factories. Large plantations grew cotton, which was a major crop in the South. This work often relied on the labor of enslaved people.
Everything changed for Huntsville after World War II. The U.S. Army had built the Redstone Arsenal nearby during the war.

Huntsville is the most populous city in the state of Alabama.
The city's origins date back to the early 19th century. A pioneer named John Hunt arrived in 1805.

Huntsville played a major role in early state politics. In 1819, the city hosted a constitutional convention. Delegates met in the cabinet-making shop of Walker Allen. They wrote a constitution for the new state of Alabama. When Alabama joined the Union, Huntsville served as the first state capital. This designation lasted for only one legislative session. The capital later moved to more central locations. It moved to Cahaba, then Tuscaloosa, and finally Montgomery. In 1855, the Memphis and Charleston Railroad reached the city. This was the first railway to link the Atlantic coast with the lower Mississippi River.
Early economic growth relied on the cotton industry. Wealthy planters moved from Virginia, Georgia, and the Carolinas. They established plantations to grow short-staple cotton. The invention of the cotton gin made this possible. This industry relied heavily on the labor of enslaved people.
The American Civil War brought significant changes to the region. Huntsville initially opposed secession from the Union in 1861. However, the city provided many men for the Confederacy. The 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment was the first Alabama unit to fight. Union troops seized the city in April 1862. They wanted to control the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.
Modern Huntsville grew rapidly after World War II. In 1941, the U.S. Army built several facilities nearby. These included the Huntsville Arsenal and Redstone Arsenal.
Today, Huntsville is famously known as "The Rocket City."
