Today, the species is considered critically endangered. This means they face a very high risk of disappearing from the wild forever. Protecting them is vital because they represent a unique part of Earth's biological history.

To survive in harsh desert environments, these camels have developed remarkable physical adaptations. Their bodies are built to handle extreme temperatures and intense sandstorms. They possess long, narrow, slit-like nostrils and double rows of thick eyelashes. These features act as filters to keep sand out of their respiratory systems. Their ears are also covered in hair for protection. For movement, they have tough, undivided soles on their feet. These feet have two large toes that spread wide apart. This structure allows them to walk easily across hot, shifting sand or jagged, stony terrain.

Perhaps the most incredible biological feat of *Camelus ferus* is its ability to handle salt. Most mammals cannot survive on highly saline water, but the wild Bactrian camel can drink water that is saltier than seawater. This adaptation allows them to thrive in arid plains and hills where fresh water is extremely scarce. In the winter, they can even eat snow to obtain necessary liquids. While many people believe camels store water in their humps, this is a misconception. The humps actually serve other purposes, but the camels are highly efficient at conserving the water they do consume. Without access to water sources, even these hardy animals will suffer a decline in health.

Historically, the classification of this species has changed as science improved. Originally, researchers believed they were just a subspecies of the domestic camel. They were named *C. bactrianus ferus*, with *ferus* meaning "wild." However, modern genetic research revealed they are a separate sister species. This discovery elevated them to full species status as *Camelus ferus*.

Conservationists are working hard to prevent the extinction of this species. Governments in China and Mongolia have established several nature reserves to protect their habitats. The Wild Camel Protection Foundation also works to protect them in their natural desert environments. Some programs even involve captive breeding, such as the Zakhyn-Us Sanctuary in Mongolia. These programs aim to produce healthy calves to bolster the dwindling numbers. By protecting the wild Bactrian camel, scientists hope to preserve a lineage that has survived for hundreds of thousands of years.
