The Ethiopian wolf, scientifically known as *Canis simensis*, is a unique canine native to the high altitudes of the Ethiopian Highlands. 
To hunt its specific prey, the Ethiopian wolf has developed unique physical features. Its skull is notably long, flat, and narrow, with the facial region making up about 58% of its total length. 

There are two recognized subspecies of the Ethiopian wolf. The northern subspecies, *C. s. simensis*, lives in the Northwest Rift Valley, including the Simien Mountains and Mount Guna. 

Scientific interest in the species began in 1835 when Eduard Rüppell first described it. Rüppell even provided a specimen skull to the British Museum. In the mid-19th century, travelers in Abyssinia recorded local beliefs that wearing wolf skin could cause death if hair entered a wound. Even Charles Darwin studied the species, hypothesizing that it might have given rise to greyhounds. 

The survival of the Ethiopian wolf is a serious concern due to its small and fragmented population. In 2011, the adult population was estimated to be between 360 and 440 individuals, with more than half living in the Bale Mountains. The species faces several major threats, including habitat degradation from overgrazing by expanding human populations. It also faces dangers from disease, such as rabies, which can spread from free-ranging domestic dogs. In the 1990s, a combination of shooting and a severe rabies epidemic in the Web Valley and Sanetti Plateau led the IUCN to classify the species as critically endangered. However, after the Bale populations recovered, the status was moved back to endangered in 2004.
Evolutionary studies provide a fascinating look at how this wolf came to be. Fossil evidence from the Melka Wakena site suggests that the ancestors of the Ethiopian wolf arrived in Africa from Eurasia approximately 1.8 million years ago. 
Today, conservation efforts are led by the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme, a partnership between Oxford University and the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority.
