The split between the tribes that led to modern camels and llamas occurred over 16 million years ago. Eventually, humans domesticated these animals, spreading them globally for work and food.
Camels also exhibit unique anatomical features for desert life. Their mouths have a thick, leathery lining to protect them while chewing thorny plants. To defend against sand, they have long eyelashes, ear hairs, and nostrils that can close. They also possess a translucent third eyelid, or nictitating membrane, to dislodge sand from their eyes. Their kidneys and intestines are highly efficient at reabsorbing water. Specifically, their kidneys have a 1:4 cortex to medulla ratio, which helps limit urine volume. Even their immune systems are unique, possessing small, durable "heavy-chain-only" antibodies that developed roughly 50 million years ago.
