To survive without external water, camels have developed remarkable physiological adaptations. They can drink as much as 113 liters of water at a single time. This water is stored in the bloodstream rather than the humps.

Their kidneys and intestines are highly efficient at reabsorbing water. Specifically, their kidneys have a 1:4 cortex to medulla ratio, which helps limit urine volume. Even their immune systems are unique, possessing small, durable "heavy-chain-only" antibodies that developed roughly 50 million years ago.
