Jim Jensen first found specimens in 1975 near the town of Moab. Later, in 1991, Carl Limone found a large claw. This led James Kirkland, Robert Gaston, and Donald Burge to find even more remains in Grand County, Utah. In 1993, Kirkland and his team officially described the dinosaur. They named the first species *Utahraptor ostrommaysi*. This name honors John Ostrom and Chris Mays for their work with dinosaurs.

Estimating the size of *Utahraptor* is a complex task for scientists. The largest known specimen, BYUVP 15465, had a femur length of 115 centimeters. This is about 15 centimeters larger than the femur of *Achillobator*. Some researchers estimate the dinosaur was about 5.5 to 6 meters long. Weight estimates vary depending on the study. Some estimates suggest a mass similar to a modern polar bear. Other researchers, like Ruben Molina-Pérez and Asier Larramendi, estimated a mass of 500 kilograms.

Recent studies in 2024 have also provided higher mass estimates.

Detailed bone studies reveal unique structures in the *Utahraptor* skeleton. The dorsal vertebrae lacked pleurocoels. These are hollow depressions that help reduce weight in many other dinosaurs. The tail vertebrae were platycoelous, meaning they were flat on one side and concave on the other. The tail had a "hemicaudothecal" condition. This means the tail vertebrae were shortened, which increased overall flexibility. This flexibility may have been necessary for such a large body. The premaxilla, or the bone at the very front of the upper jaw, was very large. It was perhaps 250% larger than the premaxilla of *Deinonychus*.

Finally, *Utahraptor* provides clues about dinosaur social lives. Fossil remains of several individuals of different ages have been found together. This suggests that *Utahraptor* was gregarious, meaning it lived in social groups. They may have practiced degrees of post-nestling care for their young. This shows a complex way of living within an ecosystem. By studying these social connections, scientists gain a better view of the Early Cretaceous world.
