Deinosuchus was a giant predator from a long time ago. 

This animal had a very wide snout. Its teeth were thick and strong. These teeth were built for crushing food. It likely ate fish and sea turtles. It may have even eaten large dinosaurs. 
Deinosuchus had special parts on its back. These were called osteoderms. They are hard plates that cover the skin. These plates were heavy and had deep pits. These pits helped hold tissue to support its big body. Scientists think it spent most of its life in the water. It may have moved on land by dragging its belly. 
Fossils of this giant have been found in many places. They were found in twelve U.S. states. They were also found in northern Mexico. Some fossils were found in Texas and Montana. People first found its teeth in North Carolina.

This predator had a very specific way of living. It had a broad snout like a modern alligator. Its teeth were thick and very strong. The teeth in the back were short and blunt. These were built for crushing food instead of just piercing it. 
Finding these fossils has been a long journey. In 1858, Ebenezer Emmons found two large teeth in North Carolina. He thought they belonged to a different animal. Later, in 1903, John Bell Hatcher and T.W. Stanton found bony plates in Montana. At first, they thought these belonged to a dinosaur. After Hatcher died, W. J. Holland studied the fossils. In 1909, Holland gave the animal the name Deinosuchus. 
Many different places have given us clues about Deinosuchus. Fossils have been found in 12 U.S. states. These include Texas, Montana, and places along the East Coast. They have also been found in northern Mexico.
We can compare Deinosuchus to animals we see today. It looked very much like a modern alligator or crocodile. However, its bite was much more powerful. Scientists estimate its bite force was between 10,000 and 20,000 pounds. 
Deinosuchus was a massive, extinct genus of crocodilian that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. 

The anatomy of Deinosuchus allowed it to function as a highly efficient hunter. It possessed a broad, alligator-like snout with a slightly bulbous tip. Its jaws were filled with thick, robust teeth designed for crushing rather than piercing. The teeth located toward the rear of the mouth were especially short, rounded, and blunt. 
Physical characteristics also included heavy protection for its body. The back of a Deinosuchus was covered in osteoderms, which are bony plates known as scutes. 

The history of discovering Deinosuchus is a long and winding scientific journey. In 1858, geologist Ebenezer Emmons described two large fossil teeth found in North Carolina. He originally thought they belonged to a genus called Polyptychodon. Later, in 1903, John Bell Hatcher and T.W. Stanton discovered osteoderms in Montana. They initially believed these bones belonged to an ankylosaurid dinosaur named Euoplocephalus. After Hatcher passed away, W. J. Holland studied the specimens. In 1909, Holland officially described the genus and named it Deinosuchus. The name is derived from Greek words meaning "terrible crocodile."
Scientific understanding of the genus has changed significantly due to new fossil finds. In 1940, an expedition to Big Bend National Park in Texas recovered more fossils. These were described by Edwin H. Colbert and Roland T. Bird as Phobosuchus riograndensis. Later, researchers Donald Baird and Jack Horner reassigned these remains to Deinosuchus. 
The scale of Deinosuchus is truly remarkable when compared to modern reptiles. While a modern saltwater crocodile has a very strong bite, Deinosuchus was much more powerful. Scientists estimate its bite force was between 10,000 and 20,000 pounds.
Today, paleontologists continue to debate the exact classification of Deinosuchus. For a long time, it was placed within the family Crocodylidae. However, new analysis of specimens from Texas and Georgia in 1999 placed it in the clade Alligatoroidea. A 2025 study by Jules D. Walter and colleagues suggests an even different view. They argue that Deinosuchus might not be a true crocodilian at all. Instead, they suggest it represents a group of derived non-crocodilian eusuchians. These ongoing studies help us better understand the complex family tree of ancient reptiles.
