Tanystropheus was a unique reptile from a long time ago. 
Scientists have found many fossils of this animal. Some fossils come from a place called Monte San Giorgio. This site is on the border of Italy and Switzerland. 
These reptiles lived in or near the water. They were likely ambush predators. This means they waited to catch food. They used their long necks to grab slippery prey. They could move on land and in the water. Their strong legs and tail helped them swim in shallow water.

Tanystropheus was a remarkable genus of extinct archosauromorph reptiles. 
The anatomy of the neck was highly specialized to support such extreme length. The neck was composed of only 13 vertebrae, which are the individual bones making up the spine. To keep this long structure stable, the vertebrae were strengthened by extensive cervical ribs. These ribs provided extra support along the neck. Although the neck was very long, it remained lightweight. This was possible because the neck was stabilized by tendons. This structural design allowed the animal to move without the neck becoming a fatal weight. 
Researchers have identified different species within the genus based on their physical traits. At the famous Monte San Giorgio site, two distinct species lived. The first was Tanystropheus longobardicus, a smaller species. It possessed tricuspid teeth, which means its teeth had three cusps or points. The second was Tanystropheus hydroides, a larger species. This animal had a broader skull with large, interlocking, curved fangs. 
The history of discovering Tanystropheus is a story of correcting scientific mistakes. In 1886, Francesco Bassani found a fossil and thought it was a flying pterosaur. He named it Tribelesodon. He believed the long bones were actually wing fingers. However, excavations by Bernhard Peyer in the 1920s and 1930s changed this view. Peyer found many more complete fossils at Monte San Giorgio. These discoveries proved the long bones were actually neck vertebrae, not wings. 
Understanding the lifestyle of Tanystropheus is a major part of modern paleontology. There has been much debate about whether they lived on land or in water. Some scientists noted that their necks were stiff and ungainly. This suggested they relied heavily on water to move. However, their limbs and tails looked very much like those of land-dwelling reptiles. Recent studies suggest an intermediate lifestyle. They were likely capable of moving on both land and in the water. 
Tanystropheus was likely a piscivorous ambush predator. This means it hunted fish by waiting quietly for prey to swim near. The narrow skull of T. longobardicus had teeth perfect for gripping slippery fish. In contrast, the larger T. hydroides had fangs similar to those of fully aquatic plesiosaurs. 
The study of Tanystropheus connects to the broader understanding of the Tanystropheidae family. This is a clade, or group, of many long-necked Triassic archosauromorphs. By studying the specific measurements and bone structures of Tanystropheus, scientists can map the history of life. They can see how different species adapted to different niches in the Triassic ecosystem. From the large bonebeds in Miedary, Poland, to the well-preserved skeletons in China, these fossils provide a massive amount of data.
