These travelers used the port to reach the Kotohira Shrine. In 1588, Ikoma Chikamasa built the first Takamatsu Castle. Later, the Matsudaira family ruled the area for a long time. The modern city was officially created in February 1890. 
Today, Takamatsu is a large and growing place. In 2020, the population was about 417,496 people.

In the western part, an alluvial fan was created by the Koto River. An alluvial fan is a landform created when a river deposits sediment. The eastern side consists of a flooded plain formed by the Kasuga and Shinkawa rivers. In the northeast, the Yashima plateau rises as a table-shaped landform. This plateau protrudes into the Seto Inland Sea. Additionally, parts of the city fall within the Setonaikai National Park. The city's territory even includes several small inhabited islands in the sea.
Takamatsu experiences a humid subtropical climate, known as Cfa in the Köppen climate classification. 
The history of the area stretches back to the ancient Sanuki Province. During the Heian and Kamakura periods, the location was a major transportation center. It served as a gateway for pilgrims traveling to the Kotohira Shrine from Honshu. In 1588, Ikoma Chikamasa constructed the first Takamatsu Castle. Later, in 1642, the Matsudaira family was awarded the Takamatsu Domain. They ruled the area until the Meiji restoration. The modern municipality was officially established on February 15, 1890. 
Today, Takamatsu is a significant economic center in the Shikoku region. It is the largest municipality on the island. The city hosts many branch offices for nationwide companies. It also contains most of the national government's branch offices for Shikoku. The Symbol Tower, completed in 2004, is the city's tallest building. 
Transportation in Takamatsu is highly developed to support its large population. The main hub is Takamatsu Station, which is operated by JR Shikoku.
There are many cultural and historical sites for visitors to explore. Ritsurin Garden is a famous site designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
