Political changes shaped the modern city over many years. Following the Meiji restoration, Himeji became the capital of Himeji Prefecture in 1871. This prefecture was later renamed Shikama Prefecture. In 1876, it was merged into the larger Hyōgo Prefecture. The modern municipality system was officially established on April 1, 1889. After the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923, the government even considered moving the national capital to Himeji. In 1996, the city attained Core city status. This status gave the local government more autonomy. The city grew further in 2006 when several towns were merged into it.

The city faced significant challenges during World War II. Himeji was a target for the United States' XXI Bomber Command. This was because the city was an important rail terminal. It also contained two large military zones. The first air raid happened on June 22, 1945. It involved 60 B-29 Superfortress bombers targeting a Kawanishi Aircraft Company factory. This attack killed 341 people and left 10,220 people homeless. A second attack occurred on July 3, 1945. During this raid, 107 aircraft dropped 767 tons of incendiary bombs. This destroyed 63.3% of the built-up areas. The attack killed 173 people and destroyed 10,300 buildings.

Despite the heavy bombing, Himeji Castle remained unscathed. It was blackened by smoke, but it survived. One firebomb was even dropped directly on it. The castle has also survived the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake and many typhoons. Today, the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city's economy is diverse and supports many people.
