The city grew because of its unique geography. The terrain has three specific features called tesserae. These were formed by the erosion of the San Francisco and Santo Domingo streams. These watercourses and the nearby Tormes river made the land very useful. Early settlers used these features for defense and to control the surrounding area.

The first human habitat dates to the beginning of the first millennium BC. This was found at the San Vicente hill. Later, a more stable settlement developed at the Teso de las Catedrales. This site was a Castro, which is a type of fortified settlement. It remained important until the Roman period.

Roman influence changed the city forever. The Romans turned the indigenous settlement into the Roman civitas of Salmantica. They restructured the city to make it a center for trade and exchange. They built the Calzada de la Plata, which was a major road for communication.

They also built a Roman bridge to cross the Tormes river. This bridge has provided passage since the 1st century. The Romans also built the Cerca Vieja, which was the primitive city wall. In 2015, workers found a marble statue of a man in a toga. This statue likely came from the Roman forum. It is now kept in the Museum of Salamanca.

After the Roman Empire ended, many different groups controlled the area. The Alans settled in the region first. Later, the Visigoths conquered the city and added it to their territory. In 712, the Muslim invasion began. Musa ibn Nusayr conquered the city during this time. For a while, the area was a "no man's land." Frequent attacks meant the population centers were often destroyed. Eventually, Christian kingdoms began to reclaim the land. In the 10th century, Ramiro II of León led a repopulation effort.
