Count Pedro Ansúrez and his wife led the repopulation of the area. They built a palace and the La Antigua church. By the 12th and 13th centuries, the city grew rapidly due to royal commercial privileges.

During the early modern period, Valladolid became a political center. In 1469, Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon were married here. Christopher Columbus also died in the city in 1506. Between 1601 and 1606, Valladolid briefly served as the capital of the Hispanic Monarchy. Economic changes shaped the city in later centuries. In the 19th century, the creation of the Canal of Castile boosted trade. This made Valladolid the largest wheat market in the region. In the mid-20th century, the city underwent industrialization. It became a major center for the automotive industry.
