It sits in Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. This volcano is actually the most active one in all of Japan. The mountain has three main peaks called Kita-dake, Naka-dake, and Minami-dake. Kita-dake is the highest peak of the three. Minami-dake is the southern peak and has been very active lately.

The volcano works by releasing magma from deep underground. Sakurajima sits on the rim of the huge Aira caldera. This caldera formed about 28,000 years ago during a massive eruption. That event was so big that the ground collapsed inward. This created a large bowl shape called a caldera. Sakurajima formed about 3,000 years after that big event. It acts as an active vent for the same magma reservoir. This means it draws its energy from the same place as the ancient caldera.

History shows us how much Sakurajima can change. In 1914, a powerful eruption called the Taisho eruption happened.

Before this event, Sakurajima was a separate island. During the eruption, huge lava flows poured into the sea. These flows filled the narrow strait between the island and the mainland. This turned the island into a peninsula. The eruption also made parts of Kagoshima Bay much shallower. This change even made the tides higher in the bay.

Many important dates and numbers help scientists track the volcano. The first recorded eruption in history was in 963 AD. Between 1955 and 2024, experts saw 15,057 eruptions. Most of these came from the Minamidake and Showa craters. In 2009, an eruption sent debris up to 2,000 meters. Another eruption in 2010 sent debris up to 5,000 meters high. In July 2022, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a level 5 alert. This was the highest alert level ever used for Sakurajima.

Even with the eruptions, people live and work near the volcano. The volcanic ash makes the soil immensely fertile for farming. This soil helps grow huge Sakurajima daikon radishes. It also helps grow Sakurajima komikan oranges.

Many people visit the area to see the hot spring resorts, or onsen. Tourists also enjoy seeing the lava flows from past eruptions. The Sakurajima Ferry runs 24/7 to help people travel there. Living near a volcano is a hard job, but the land provides much for the people.

Today, the volcano is part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. It remains a site of intense scientific study and a major destination for tourists.

The volcano's structure is defined by three distinct peaks. These are Kita-dake, the northern peak; Naka-dake, the central peak; and Minami-dake, the southern peak. Kita-dake is the highest peak of the mountain. Minami-dake has been the most recently active area. Since 2006, much of the activity centered on the Showa crater, which is east of the Minami-dake summit. However, by 2025, the activity had moved back to the main summit crater.

To understand Sakurajima, one must look at the Aira caldera. This is a massive, bowl-shaped depression that formed about 28,000 years ago. It was created by an enormous "blow-out-and-cave-in" eruption. During that event, several hundred cubic kilometers of ash and pumice were ejected. This caused the magma chamber underneath to collapse. Sakurajima formed about 3,000 years after this collapse. It sits on the rim of the caldera and acts as an active vent. It draws its magma from the same reservoir that fed the ancient caldera eruption.

The history of Sakurajima includes many different types of eruptions. Most eruptions are Strombolian, which are relatively small explosions that affect only the summit. However, the volcano also experiences much larger Plinian eruptions. These are massive, explosive events. The first recorded eruption in history occurred in 963 AD. One of the most significant events was the 1914 eruption, also known as the Taisho eruption. This was the most powerful eruption in twentieth-century Japan.

The 1914 eruption fundamentally changed the geography of the region. It began with explosive columns and pyroclastic flows. After large earthquakes on January 12 and 13, the eruption became effusive. This means it produced large, flowing streams of lava. These lava flows filled the narrow strait between the island and the mainland. This process turned the island into a peninsula. The island also grew by engulfing several smaller islands nearby. Because the lava filled parts of Kagoshima Bay, the water became shallower and the tides became higher.

Monitoring the volcano is vital because of the nearby population. The city of Kagoshima has 680,000 residents living just a few kilometers away. Between 1955 and 2024, experts observed 15,057 eruptions from the Minamidake and Showa craters. Because of these risks, Sakurajima was named a Decade Volcano in 1991. This means it is a site chosen for intense study by the United Nations. Scientists use the Sakurajima Volcano Observatory, established in 1960, to track activity. Residents participate in regular evacuation drills and use specially built shelters.

Despite the danger, the volcano provides many benefits to the local area. The volcanic ash has created immensely fertile soil. This soil is perfect for growing specific local produce. For example, the Sakurajima daikon is a huge, white radish the size of a basketball. The area also produces Sakurajima komikan oranges.

Tourism is also a major part of the economy. People visit to enjoy the onsen, which are hot spring resorts. They also come to see the unique pottery made from volcanic ash. The Sakurajima Ferry provides 24/7 service to connect the area to the mainland.
