It is the second largest active volcano in the country. This mountain is located in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. It sits inside a massive, bowl-shaped area called a caldera.

This caldera is huge, stretching 25 kilometers from north to south. It is also 18 kilometers wide from east to west. The caldera is so large that it holds the city of Aso inside it. This place is part of the Aso Kujū National Park.

This giant landscape was made by a special way the earth works. Long ago, huge eruptions happened in a series. These were four large-scale eruptions known as Aso 1 through Aso 4. As much volcanic ash and melted rock came out of the ground, a large chamber became empty. This caused the ground above it to collapse downward. This collapse created the massive depression we see today.

It is the second largest active volcano in Japan, following only Mount Fuji. The volcano sits within the Aso Kujū National Park in the Kumamoto Prefecture. Most people associate the name with the central part of the Aso Caldera. This caldera is a giant, bowl-shaped depression in the Earth. It measures about 25 kilometers from north to south and 18 kilometers from east to west.

The caldera is so vast that it contains entire cities, including the city of Aso, as well as Takamori and Minamiaso.

The formation of this landscape was a violent and long process. Between 300,000 and 90,000 years ago, four massive eruptions occurred. Scientists call these events Aso 1 through Aso 4. During these eruptions, huge amounts of ash and pyroclastic flow were released. A pyroclastic flow is a fast-moving current of hot gas and volcanic matter. As these materials left the volcanic chamber, the chamber became empty. This caused the ground above to collapse inward, creating the caldera.

The fourth eruption, known as Aso 4, was particularly enormous. Its volcanic ash covered the entire Kyushu region and reached as far as Yamaguchi Prefecture.

This high rainfall gives the mountain borderline subtropical characteristics. The rain is especially heavy during the months of June and July. These weather patterns support unique botanical ecosystems. For example, the slopes of Takadake feature the seasonal flowering of the Rhododendron kiusianum. This makes the mountain a significant area for protected plant life.

Mount Aso has also left a mark on popular culture and technology. In films, such as those by Ishirō Honda, the volcano is home to the kaiju Rodan. It also inspired the Mt. Chimney location in the Pokémon series. In the past, the Mount Aso Ropeway provided easy access to the mountain. However, the system faced many challenges from volcanic ash and earthquakes. It was eventually dismantled in 2019. Despite these changes, the mountain remains a central part of Japan's natural and cultural identity.
