From the glacier, the water flows southwest through Gletsch and the Goms. The river is a torrent in the area down to Brig. After Brig, it becomes a great mountain river. It flows through a glacial valley toward Martigny. Along this path, it collects water from the Pennine Alps. It also receives water from the Bernese Alps and the Mont Blanc massif.

As the river moves, it collects many tributaries. In Switzerland, it receives the Massa and the Vispa. The Drance joins it at Martigny. The river then turns north toward Lake Geneva. History shows the Rhône has always been a vital highway. The Greeks and Romans used it for trade. It connected the Mediterranean to east-central Gaul. This helped spread Greek culture to local tribes. Navigation was often very difficult. The river had fierce currents and seasonal floods. In the past, people used water coaches pulled by horses. A trip by barge could take three weeks. Later, steam boats were introduced. One experimental steam boat was built at Lyon in 1783. By 1829, regular steam services began. Modern motor barges can now finish the trip in three days.

Today, the river is managed for energy and transport. The Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR) was formed in 1933. This group works to improve navigation and generate electricity. They also help with irrigation and flood protection. Between 1964 and 1980, twelve hydroelectric plants and locks were built. These structures produce 13 GWh of electricity every year. This is 16% of France's total hydroelectric production. The river is also famous for its strong currents. Speeds can reach 10 kilometers per hour. This happens near Vallabrègues and south of Lyon. To help ships, the locks operate daily from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Rhône valley is also a special place for nature and farming. The valley is sheltered by high Alpine ranges. This makes the Valais region the driest and largest wine region in Switzerland. The sunny microclimate is perfect for vineyards. The river also connects many important cities. These include Lyon, Avignon, and Arles.
