The Po is a very long river.

The Po is the longest river in Italy.

The river flows into a wide delta near the Adriatic Sea. A delta is a land area made by river soil. This area has hundreds of small channels. Some parts are called the active delta. Other parts are called the fossil delta.
The Po is the longest river in Italy.
This river carries a very large amount of water. It is one of the three Mediterranean rivers with the largest water discharge. Because it carries so much water, the Po can cause heavy flooding. To keep people safe, more than half of the river is controlled with embankments. These are walls built along the banks to hold the water in place.
Long ago, the land around the river was part of Roman Cisalpine Gaul. This area was split into two parts by the water. The part south of the Po was called Cispadane Gaul. The part north of the Po was called Transpadane Gaul. In the city of Milan, the river is linked to a network of channels. These channels are called navigli. A famous designer named Leonardo da Vinci helped to design them.
The Po flows through a huge area called the Po Valley. This valley is a major place for industry and farming. It produces 35% of all the food grown in Italy. Many people live here, including over 16 million people in 2002. Farmers in the valley grow cereals and rice. Rice needs a lot of water, so farmers use irrigation to help it grow.
At the end of its path, the river creates a complex delta. This area is split into an active delta and a fossil delta. The active delta has hundreds of small channels that still connect to the sea. There are five main channels, such as the Po di Maestra and Po di Goro. The fossil delta contains older channels that no longer reach the sea. Much of this land is now a protected park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many plants and birds.
The Po is the longest river in Italy. It flows eastward across the northern part of the country. The river begins in the Cottian Alps. Specifically, the headwaters form from a spring seeping from a stony hillside. This location is called Pian del Re. It sits at the head of the Val Po. It is located under the northwest face of Monviso.
The Po carries a massive volume of water. It is one of the three Mediterranean rivers with the largest water discharge. This means it moves more water than most other rivers in the region. Along with the Rhône and the Nile, it is a major water system. Because of this high discharge, the river is prone to heavy flooding. To manage this, engineers have built embankments. These walls control over half of the river's total length.
The river travels through a low-gradient valley. The slope of the valley decreases as the river moves east. In the west, the slope is 0.35%. In the east, it drops to 0.14%. This low gradient creates a vast, flat area known as the Po Valley. This valley is the largest agricultural area in Italy. It accounts for 35% of the nation's agricultural production. In 2002, more than 16 million people lived in this region.
Many tributaries, or smaller rivers, flow into the Po. There are 141 of these streams in total. Some of the longest are the Adda, which is 313 km long. The Oglio is 280 km, and the Tanaro is 276 km. The Ticino is another major tributary at 248 km. These waters help feed the massive Po Basin. The basin drains an area of 70,000 square kilometers. Most of this area is in Italy. However, parts of the basin also sit in Switzerland and France.
The river's path has changed throughout history. In the middle of the eighteenth century, the Reno river was diverted. This was done to reduce the risk of devastating floods. Near the end of its course, the Po forms a wide delta. This delta is split into two distinct parts. The active delta contains channels that still connect to the Adriatic Sea. The fossil delta contains older channels that no longer reach the sea.
The active delta was shaped by human intervention. In 1604, the city of Venice diverted the main stream. They used a channel called the Taglio di Porto Viro. Venice wanted to stop sediment from filling up its lagoon. This diversion created a new path for the water. Today, the delta contains five main channels. These include the Po di Maestra and the Po di Goro. The area near Comacchio is famous for its eels.
The Po Delta is now a protected area. It is managed by regional parks in Veneto and Emilia-Romagna. In 1999, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site. The wetlands, forests, and dunes host high biodiversity. There are between 1,000 and 1,100 plant species there. The area also supports 374 vertebrate species. This includes about 300 different types of birds.
Geologically, the Po Valley has a complex past. Millions of years ago, the Mediterranean Basin was much different. During the Messinian salinity crisis, the sea nearly dried up. The Po Valley and the Adriatic depression were once a single canyon. Later, the sea refilled and covered northern Italy. Over time, sediment from the mountains filled the valley. The coastline has changed due to both nature and human activity. Today, the coastline faces challenges from degradation.
