It sat on the eastern border of the country. This position allowed it to border both Switzerland and Italy. The region's name was derived from two major features: the Rhône river and the Alps mountain range. Since January 1, 2016, it has been part of a larger region called Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Before this change, it was surrounded by regions such as Bourgogne, Auvergne, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

During this time, Lyon grew into a major Roman city. The area later belonged to the Merovingian and Carolingian Kingdoms. Eventually, it became a royal territory under the Capetians.
