Rajneesh was a prominent Indian philosopher, mystic, and the founder of the Rajneesh movement.

He was a controversial leader of a new religious movement during his lifetime. He rejected institutional religions and formal religious dogma. He believed that spiritual experience could not be organized into a single system. Instead, he advocated for personal experience and meditation. He taught that people should embrace life fully while remaining unattached to worldly desires. This approach differed from traditional ascetic practices that encourage giving up worldly pleasures.

His spiritual journey began with a personal awakening in 1953. At the age of 21, he experienced what he described as a mystical moment while sitting under a tree in Jabalpur.

Before becoming a spiritual leader, he spent many years in academia. He earned a BA in philosophy and later an MA in philosophy with distinction. He served as a lecturer in philosophy at Jabalpur University. During this time, he also traveled across India as Acharya Rajneesh. He used these travels to criticize mainstream political ideologies and the orthodoxy of traditional religions.

Rajneesh developed several distinct methods and groups to spread his ideas. In 1970, he introduced Dynamic Meditation, a unique method involving fast breathing, music, and dance.

He also initiated a group of followers known as "neo-sannyasins" in Mumbai. Unlike traditional Hindu ascetics, these followers were encouraged to lead a celebratory lifestyle. They often wore traditional saffron clothing and beaded necklaces called malas. However, they did not follow the strict, restrictive rules of traditional monastic life. Rajneesh viewed himself not as an object of worship, but as a catalytic agent for others.

His life was marked by significant transitions between different countries and cities. In 1974, he moved to Pune, India, where he established an ashram. This center offered various therapies influenced by the Human Potential Movement. By the late 1970s, the movement faced tension with the Indian government. This resulted in a back tax claim estimated at $5 million. In 1981, the movement shifted its focus to the United States. There, they established a large commune called Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon.

The period in the United States was characterized by intense legal and social conflict. The movement faced many legal battles regarding the construction of the ashram. Conflict also arose between the commune and local county residents. In 1985, Rajneesh requested that authorities investigate his personal secretary, Ma Anand Sheela. She and several supporters were later convicted of various crimes. These included a mass food-poisoning attack in 1984 intended to influence local elections. Other charges involved an attempted murder of a physician and the bugging of Rajneesh's quarters.

Following these legal issues, Rajneesh was deported from the United States in 1985. His departure was based on immigration-related charges following an Alford plea. After being deported, 21 different countries denied him entry. He returned to Mumbai in 1986 and later moved back to Pune in 1987. He spent his final years reviving his ashram in India. Rajneesh died in 1990. His life moved through many different roles, from a rebellious student to a professor, and finally to a global spiritual figure.

Today, the legacy of Rajneesh continues through various intellectual and physical institutions. His former ashram in Pune is now known as the OSHO International Meditation Resort. The Osho International Foundation, based in Switzerland, manages his intellectual property and copyrights.
