He grew up in the village of Puttaparthi in the Madras Presidency. His family belonged to a community of religious musicians. His life changed greatly when he was 14 years old. In March 1940, he was stung by a scorpion and lost consciousness. After he woke up, his behavior changed in many ways. He began to sing Sanskrit verses that he had never studied before. In May 1940, he told his family that he was the reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba. This was a famous saint who lived in Maharashtra. He said his mission was to spread righteousness and help the poor.

Followers believed Sathya Sai Baba had many miraculous abilities. They said he could make objects appear from thin air. These items included rings, necklaces, watches, and holy ash called Vibhuti. Some people believed he could heal the sick or be in two places at once. He also spoke about being all-knowing and all-powerful. While many people saw these as miracles, others made accusations of fraud. However, he was never charged with any crime.

He spent much of his life building things to help people. In 1954, he started a small free hospital in Puttaparthi. He also began a huge project in 1995 to bring drinking water to 1.2 million people. This project helped the drought-prone Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh.

He also established temples in big cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai. He wanted to make sure everyone had their basic needs met.

Sathya Sai Baba died on 24 April 2011 at the age of 84. He had predicted he would live to be 96 years old. Some followers believe he was using a different way to count years. They used a lunar system based on stars to explain his age. Around 500,000 people came to his burial to say goodbye.

In March 1940, a 14-year-old Sathya was stung by a scorpion. He lost consciousness for several hours during this event. When he regained consciousness, his behavior changed significantly. He displayed alternating states of laughter, weeping, eloquence, and silence. He also began singing Sanskrit verses without prior formal training. Doctors at the time diagnosed his behavior as hysteria.

On 23 May 1940, Sathya made a major proclamation. He told his family that he was the reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba. Shirdi Sai Baba was a famous saint from Maharashtra. This was the moment he became known as Sathya Sai Baba. He stated his mission was to re-establish Dharma, or righteousness. He also aimed to motivate love for God and service to humanity.

Many followers attributed miraculous abilities to him. They claimed he could materialize Vibhuti, which is holy ash. He was also said to produce rings, necklaces, and watches. Some believed he possessed clairvoyance and the ability of bilocation. Bilocation is the claim of being in multiple places at once. Others believed he possessed omniscience and omnipotence. However, he faced various accusations of fraud and sleight of hand. Despite these claims, he was never charged with any crime.

Sathya Sai Baba dedicated much of his life to large-scale charity. In 1954, he established a free general hospital in Puttaparthi. In 1995, he started a massive drinking water project. This project aimed to serve 1.2 million people in the Rayalaseema region.

He also built several temples in major Indian cities. These included the Sathyam Mandir in Mumbai and Shivam Mandir in Hyderabad. His work focused on meeting the basic needs of the poor.

His later years included several health challenges and security incidents. In 1963, he reportedly suffered a stroke and four heart attacks. He claimed to have healed himself in front of his followers. In 1993, an assassination attempt occurred at his residence. Four men entered his home and injured two assistants. The incident ended when police shot the four men. In 2003, he suffered a fractured hip after an accident involving a student.

Sathya Sai Baba died on 24 April 2011 at age 84. He had previously predicted he would live to age 96. Some devotees explained this using a lunar star-based calendar. They calculated his age based on 324-day years. Under this system, he had completed 95 years and 54 days. Approximately 500,000 people attended his burial ceremony.
