Maharishi's journey began with a foundation in formal science. He earned a degree in physics from Allahabad University in 1942. Following his studies, he became an assistant to Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, also known as Guru Dev. This leader was the Shankaracharya, or spiritual leader, of the Jyotir Math in the Indian Himalayas. The Maharishi served as his personal secretary and a favored pupil. He spent years attuning himself to the thinking of his master. He credited Brahmananda Saraswati with inspiring his specific teachings. The Maharishi remained a dedicated disciple until his master's death in 1953.
His background and identity were shaped by Indian social structures. He was born into the Kayastha caste, which is a high-status group of traditional scribes. While some accounts vary regarding his exact birth date, many sources suggest he was born in 1911, 1917, or 1918. Because he was not a Brahmin, he could not succeed his master as the Shankaracharya. Instead, he was charged with the responsibility of spreading meditation to the masses. This mission led him to travel extensively throughout India between 1955 and 1957. During this time, he initially called his movement the Spiritual Development Movement. In 1957, he renamed it the Spiritual Regeneration Movement.

In 2000, he established the Global Country of World Peace. This is a non-profit world government organization. He appointed leaders to this organization with titles such as rajas and majarajas, meaning kings and great kings. He eventually moved his residence near Vlodrop in the Netherlands. In 2008, he announced his retirement from all administrative roles. He entered a period of silence until his death three weeks later.
