The Qianlong Emperor was a very powerful ruler in China. He belonged to the Qing dynasty. His birth name was Hongli. He was the fourth son of the Yongzheng Emperor. People often called him by his era name, Qianlong. This name means "Lasting Eminence." He was a very important leader in history.
His path to the throne was carefully planned. The Yongzheng Emperor wanted to avoid a fight for power. He wrote his chosen successor's name on paper. He put it in a sealed box behind a tablet. This box stayed in the Palace of Heavenly Purity. When the Yongzheng Emperor died in 1735, the box was opened. The court saw that Hongli was the new emperor.
Qianlong was a very ambitious military leader. He led many campaigns to grow his empire. He fought in places like Burma, Nepal, and Vietnam. He also fought to control Inner Asia. One major event was the war against the Dzungar Khanate. This conflict led to the Dzungar genocide. Many Dzungar people died from war or smallpox.
He was also a great supporter of art and books. He helped create the Siku Quanshu. This was a huge collection of Chinese history. It was the largest collection ever made. However, he also used his power to check books. He oversaw many literary inquisitions. These actions suppressed about 3,100 different works.
His reign was a time of great wealth. The empire had the largest economy in the world. It also had the largest population. This was called the High Qing era. But there were also problems in the court. Corruption and inefficiency began to show. Qianlong stepped down in 1796 to let his son rule. He stayed as a leader until he died in 1799. He was 87 years old.
The Qianlong Emperor was a powerful monarch of the Qing dynasty. His personal name was Hongli, but he is most famous by his era name, Qianlong. This title translates to "Lasting Eminence." He ruled during the High Qing era, which was the peak of the dynasty's power. During his long reign, the empire possessed the largest population and economy on Earth. He is remembered as one of history's longest-reigning and longest-lived monarchs.
Hongli's path to the throne was marked by careful planning and competition. He was the fourth son of the Yongzheng Emperor. As a young prince, he held the title of "Prince Bao of the First Rank." He often acted as a chief regent while his father was away. To prevent a violent struggle for succession, the Yongzheng Emperor used a secret method. He wrote his chosen successor's name on a piece of paper. He then placed it in a sealed box behind a tablet in the Palace of Heavenly Purity. When the Yongzheng Emperor died in 1735, the box was opened to reveal Hongli as the new emperor.
Even after becoming emperor, Qianlong faced challenges to his authority. In 1739, a group of princes plotted a coup to replace him. They planned to strike during an imperial hunt at the Mulan hunting grounds. However, the plot was exposed by Prince Hongpu, and the conspirators were arrested. The emperor punished the rebels by imprisoning leaders or stripping others of their titles. Much later, in 1778, Qianlong showed mercy by restoring the original names of some of these princes. He allowed their descendants to be included in the imperial genealogy.
As a military leader, Qianlong was highly ambitious and expanded the empire's borders. He led the Ten Great Campaigns to bring new territories under Qing control. These campaigns included conflicts in Burma, Nepal, and Vietnam. The most significant military achievement was the conquest of the Dzungar Khanate in Inner Asia. This victory allowed the Qing to incorporate the regions of Dzungharia and the Tarim basin. These two distinct areas were joined together and renamed Xinjiang. This expansion brought the empire to its greatest territorial extent.
However, these military successes involved great destruction and loss of life. The war against the Dzungar Khanate resulted in the Dzungar genocide. This was a policy that led to the near-complete destruction of the Dzungar people. Historical records suggest the causes of death were varied. Approximately 40% of the 600,000 Dzungars died from smallpox. Another 20% fled to the Russian Empire or joined Kazakh tribes. The remaining 30% were killed by the Qing army.
Qianlong was also a major patron of Chinese culture and literature. He sponsored the compilation of the Siku Quanshu, or the "Complete Library of the Four Treasuries." This was the largest collection of Chinese history ever assembled. While he promoted learning, he also used his power to control ideas. He oversaw extensive literary inquisitions to suppress specific writings. These inquisitions resulted in the suppression of approximately 3,100 works. He wanted to ensure that literature aligned with his imperial standards.
Despite the era's prosperity, the seeds of decline were planted during his rule. Constant warfare led to military weakness over time. The imperial court also suffered from endemic corruption and inefficiency. These internal problems, along with a stagnating civil society, eventually weakened the Qing empire. In 1796, after sixty years of rule, Qianlong abdicated the throne. He did this so his grandfather, the Kangxi Emperor, could remain the longest-reigning emperor. Qianlong continued to hold ultimate power as Emperor Emeritus until his death in 1799. He died at the age of 87.
