Other scholars said it actually looked like the crown of the god Amon.

Thalassodromeus is a genus of pterosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period. This flying reptile lived approximately one hundred million years ago in what is now Brazil. It belonged to a group called Thalassodromidae. This group is a clade, or a branch of the family tree, that is closely related to either Tapejaromorpha or Neoazhdarchia. Thalassodromeus is an important subject for scientists because it possessed one of the most unusual head shapes in the animal kingdom. Its massive skull and specialized crest provide clues about how these ancient creatures lived and moved.

The most striking feature of Thalassodromeus was its enormous cranial crest. This crest was proportionally one of the largest among any known vertebrates. It covered about 75 percent of the side surface of the skull. The crest was not a heavy, solid bone. Instead, it was a lightly built and essentially hollow structure. It was formed by several bones, including the premaxillae, frontal bones, and parietal bones. Scientists found evidence of skeletal pneumatisation, which means the bones had air-filled spaces to keep them light. The surface of the crest also showed channels for blood vessels. These vessels likely helped with thermoregulation, or controlling body temperature, or served for social display.

The skull itself was highly specialized for life in the Romualdo Formation. The skull reached a length of about 2 feet. In 2002, palaeontologists Alexander Kellner and Diogenes de Almeida Campos officially named the species Thalassodromeus sethi. However, other scholars noted the crest actually resembles the crown of the god Amon. This debate shows how much scientists learn by comparing fossils to historical symbols.

Taxonomy, or the science of naming and classifying organisms, has been complex for this genus. In 2005, a jaw tip was assigned to the species, which later became the genus Banguela. Later, researchers assigned it back to Thalassodromeus as a new species called T. oberlii. There was also a claim of a species called T. sebesensis found in Romania. However, experts later determined that the fossil fragment was actually part of a prehistoric turtle shell. Some scientists even argued that Thalassodromeus was just an older version of its relative, Tupuxuara. Most researchers now agree that Thalassodromeus is a distinct and valid genus.

Size and physical proportions help us visualize this massive creature. Although we only have the skull, scientists estimate its wingspan was about 16 feet wide. This would make it the largest known member of the Thalassodromidae clade. Its height was roughly comparable to a human being. While its postcranial skeleton, or the body behind the head, is unknown, its relatives had unique limb proportions. Related species had hindlimbs that were 80 percent the length of their forelimbs. This suggests they were very efficient at moving on the ground. They were likely well-adapted for both flying and walking in inland settings.
