The Republic and Canton of Ticino is a unique member of the Swiss Confederation.

The geography of Ticino is divided into two traditional regions. These are the Sopraceneri and the Sottoceneri. The Monte Ceneri mountain pass separates them. The Sopraceneri is the northern region. It covers about 85% of the territory but only 43% of the population. This area contains the High Alps and Lake Maggiore. The Sottoceneri is the southern region. It sits around Lake Lugano and includes the Alpine foothills. This region covers only 15% of the land. However, it holds 57% of the people. The largest city, Lugano, is located in the Sottoceneri. The capital, Bellinzona, and the city of Locarno are in the Sopraceneri.
Water plays a massive role in shaping this rugged landscape. The canton is named after its longest river, the Ticino. This river flows from the northwest through several valleys. It travels through the Bedretto and Leventina valleys before entering Lake Maggiore. The river helps shape much of the land. In its middle section, it forms a wide area called the Riviera. Other important rivers include the Maggia and the Verzasca. The Verzasca Valley is a central part of the canton.

The history of Ticino involves many different rulers and tribes. During the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Celtic Lepontii tribe lived here. Later, the Roman Empire took control of the area. After the fall of the Western Empire, various groups ruled. These included the Ostrogoths, the Lombards, and the Franks. In the 15th century, Swiss forces began conquering the valleys. These were the last transalpine campaigns of the Old Swiss Confederacy. By 1512, places like Locarno and Lugano were annexed. The modern canton was finally formed in 1803. This happened because of the Act of Mediation. This act combined the two earlier cantons of Bellinzona and Lugano.
Because of its location, Ticino has a very specific climate. The Alps protect it from northern European weather. The Mediterranean Sea also influences the region. This creates a warm and moist climate. Summers are warm and winters are mild. This is much warmer and wetter than the rest of Switzerland. People call Ticino the "Sonnenstube," which means sun porch. This is because it receives more than 2,300 hours of sunshine every year. In comparison, Zurich receives only 1,700 hours. This warm weather makes Ticino a major tourist destination. Visitors come for the unique culture and gastronomy.
Ticino is also one of the wealthiest areas in Europe. In 2020, the GDP per capita was 83,450 Swiss francs. This was higher than the Swiss average of 80,418 Swiss francs. The canton also has a very high standard of living. In 2018, the life expectancy was 85.2 years. This was the second highest in all of Europe. The Human Development Index was 0.961 in 2021. This is one of the highest scores found anywhere in the world.
Connecting this mountainous region to the rest of Switzerland requires great engineering. The Alps act as a massive barrier. For a long time, people used mountain passes to travel. In 1882, the Gotthard Railway opened. This was the first major north-south railway link across the Alps.
