Scientists have described several species over the years. For example, P. jamandzhalgensis was named in 1960. Another species, P. beliajevae, was described in 1971 from Mongolia. In 1978, a researcher named G. F. Chen found P. tongxinensis in China. More recently, a 2022 paper identified P. tetralophus. These fossils have been found in places like China, Mongolia, and even Kenya. Each find helps us map out where these animals once traveled.

Platybelodon also showed interesting differences between males and females. This is called sexual dimorphism, which means the sexes look different.

The physical build of Platybelodon was unique among its relatives. While postcranial bones are rare, they suggest a specific body type. The limb bones indicate that Platybelodon was more lightly built. It may have been more agile than many other proboscideans. The hind foot shows that most weight was supported by the fourth metatarsal. This suggests a different standing posture than modern elephants. This agility might have helped them survive in changing ecosystems. As environments became drier, their flexible feeding habits may have given them an advantage.
