This fish had a very special way of protecting its body. It was covered in dermal bone, which is bone that grows in the skin. This bone formed hard armor plates. People first found fossils of this fish in 1867. A man named Jay Terrell found them in the cliffs near Lake Erie. He lived in Sheffield Lake, Ohio, in the United States.

He was an amateur paleontologist who collected these fossils. He gave them to John Strong Newberry. In 1873, the fossils were described as a new type of fish called Dinichthys herzeri. Later, scientists realized there were actually different species of large fish in those rocks. The name Dunkleosteus was given much later in 1956. It was named to honor David Dunkle.

There are about ten different species of Dunkleosteus.

The most famous one is Dunkleosteus terrelli. For a long time, people thought it was much larger than it really was. Some estimates said it was over 6 meters long. However, new studies show that most adults were about 3 meters long. Some very large individuals might have reached 4 meters.

There was also a smaller species called Dunkleosteus raveri. It was only about 1 meter long and had very large eyes.

We can find fossils of these fish in many different places. They have been found in the United States and Canada. Fossils are also in Poland, Belgium, and Morocco.

The largest collection of these fossils is at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Other museums in London and Washington, D.C., also have them. Studying these fossils helps us understand how life worked in the ancient ocean. It shows us how armor and hunting changed over millions of years. Even though they are gone, they tell a big story about our world.

Dunkleosteus was a massive genus of extinct fish that lived during the Late Devonian period. This era occurred between 382 and 358 million years ago. These fish were classified as arthrodires, which means they had "jointed necks."

As pelagic organisms, they lived in the open waters of the ocean. They are significant because they were among the first vertebrate apex predators. An apex predator is an animal that sits at the very top of its food chain.

The anatomy of Dunkleosteus was defined by heavy dermal bone. This is bone that grows within the skin to form protective armor. These plates covered the fish's skull and the front half of its trunk. The armor was not uniform in thickness. The nuchal plate at the back of the skull was over 5 cm thick. However, the rest of the body armor was much thinner, measuring only about 2 mm.

Unlike many modern fish, these plates had a hard cortical layer and a marrow-filled cancellous layer. This structure is very similar to the internal makeup of tetrapod bones.

Scientists have identified approximately ten different species of Dunkleosteus. These include D. terrelli, D. belgicus, D. denisoni, D. marsaisi, D. magnificus, D. missouriensis, D. newberryi, D. amblyodoratus, D. raveri, and D. tuderensis. However, the validity of many of these species is still debated. Some researchers believe several species are actually synonyms of one another. Currently, only four species are widely accepted as valid: D. terrelli, D. raveri, D. tuderensis, and possibly D. amblyodoratus.

The genus is sometimes called a "wastebasket taxon." This means it is a group used for large arthrodires that are more evolutionarily derived than Eastmanosteus.

The history of discovering Dunkleosteus began in 1867. Jay Terrell, an amateur paleontologist and hotel owner, found fossils in the cliffs near Lake Erie in Ohio.

He gave these fossils to John Strong Newberry. In 1873, Newberry described them as a single species named Dinichthys herzeri. By 1875, scientists realized the Ohio Shale contained multiple large fish species. The name Dunkleosteus was not created until 1956 by Jean-Pierre Lehman. He named the genus to honor David Dunkle, a former curator at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The name combines Dunkle's name with the Greek word "osteon," meaning bone.

Estimating the size of Dunkleosteus has been a major challenge for paleontologists. Because only about 5% of specimens have more than a quarter of their skeleton preserved, much of the body remains a mystery.

Early estimates suggested D. terrelli could reach lengths of 6 meters or more. However, modern studies suggest these large figures are poorly supported. Recent, extensive analyses of body shape suggest typical adults were approximately 3 meters long. Exceptionally large individuals might have reached roughly 4 meters. The skulls of D. terrelli could reach lengths of up to 1 meter.

Different species show interesting variations in form and size. D. raveri was a much smaller species, likely only 1 meter long. It also possessed comparatively large eyes. Some researchers suggest that D. raveri may have been an ancestor to D. terrelli. Another species, D. marsaisi, had a narrower snout than D. terrelli. Its fossils were found in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Meanwhile, D. amblyodoratus earned its name from its nuchal and paranuchal plates. These plates formed a shape resembling a blunt spearhead.

Understanding Dunkleosteus helps scientists map the evolution of vertebrate life. The study of these fossils connects to broader topics in phylogeny, or the study of evolutionary relationships. For example, researchers use morphological datasets to determine if Dunkleosteus belongs to the Dunkleosteoidea clade. There is ongoing debate about the relationship between Dunkleosteus and other groups like the Aspinothoracidi. By studying these ancient armored fish, we learn how predators first began to dominate the Earth's oceans.
