Some people wanted more freedom or a new social identity. Others wanted to drive away European travelers. By 1851, he moved his people to found the city of Dinguiraye.

Omar Tall used military strength to expand his influence across the Sahel. He used guns purchased in Sierra Leone to help his army. In 1855, he took control of Nioro du Sahel and made it his capital. He also fought against the French who were near the Senegal River. In 1860, he made a treaty with the French to set boundaries. However, he also fought other Muslim states in the east. These battles were very large and difficult. Sadly, more than 70,000 people died during the fighting in this region.
