He started the Tukulor Empire. This empire was big. It covered parts of Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea, and Mali. He fought many battles to grow his land. He fought against local leaders and also against the French. He even fought other Muslim groups. These wars were very hard. Many people died in these battles.
People have different ideas about him today. In Senegal, some see him as a hero. They think he fought against the French. In Mali, some see him as an invader. Omar's journey toward leadership began with his education and faith. He was born around 1794 in a place called Futa Toro. He studied at a school called a madrassa. In 1828, he went on a special journey to Mecca known as the Hajj. While there, he studied with scholars at Al Azhar University. He also met the leader of the Tijaniyya Sufi order. This leader gave him a special role as a commander. When he returned home in 1830, he had many new titles. One title was El Hadj, which shows he completed the Hajj.
As he grew in power, Omar Tall began to build his own community. He moved to a place called Jegunko in 1840 to start a religious settlement. He believed people should use their own religious judgment. He also taught that followers should listen to a wise spiritual guide. His message reached many people who were unhappy with local leaders. Some people wanted more freedom or a new social identity. Others wanted to drive away European travelers. By 1851, he moved his people to found the city of Dinguiraye.
Omar Tall used military strength to expand his influence across the Sahel. He used guns purchased in Sierra Leone to help his army. In 1855, he took control of Nioro du Sahel and made it his capital. He also fought against the French who were near the Senegal River. In 1860, he made a treaty with the French to set boundaries. However, he also fought other Muslim states in the east. These battles were very large and difficult. Sadly, more than 70,000 people died during the fighting in this region.
Today, people have very different views about the legacy of Omar Tall.
