Abdelkader's father was asked to lead the resistance. However, the position eventually went to Abdelkader in 1832. He was elected Amir al-Mu'minin, or Emir, by the western tribes. 
Abdelkader used diplomacy to secure his position. In 1834, he signed the Desmichels Treaty with the French. This treaty gave him near-total control over the Oran Province. Later, in 1837, he signed the Treaty of Tafna. This agreement gave him even more control over the Algerian interior. During this peace, he built a functional state. He established a capital city at Tagdemt. His government was broadly theocratic, meaning it was based on religious principles. He even created a currency called the muhammadiyya. 
His leadership style was unique and inclusive. He maintained a standing army of 2,000 men. He also relied on volunteers from local tribes.
Conflict eventually resumed as French military strategies changed. General Thomas Robert Bugeaud returned to Algeria in 1841. Bugeaud used a strategy of annihilation to conquer the territory. The French practiced a scorched earth policy in the countryside. This was intended to make residents leave Abdelkader. 

Abdelkader is remembered for his high moral standards. He was known for his chivalry toward his enemies. He once released French captives because he did not have enough food to feed them. In 1860, he performed a crucial intervention in Damascus. He helped save the Christian community from a massacre. This act brought him honors and awards from all over the world.
