He later became a professor at University College Liverpool in 1881. He also led the University of Birmingham from 1900 to 1919.
In 1894, Lodge gave a famous lecture at the Royal Institution. He showed how radio waves act much like light. He could send these waves across a distance of 55 meters. 
Lodge's ideas helped change the world we live in today. His work on tuning was so important that the Marconi Company bought his patent. He also helped make car engines work better. He invented a part called a Lodge Igniter. This part uses a spark to help an engine run. His two sons even started a company called Lodge Plugs Ltd. because of his ideas. Lodge's journey into science began during his youth in Staffordshire. His father was a merchant who sold Purbeck blue clay to pottery manufacturers. At age 14, Lodge left school to join his father's business. He worked as an agent for B. Fayle & Co. and traveled as far as Scotland. Despite this work, he attended physics lectures in London and at the Wedgwood Institute. By 1869, he began conducting his own real experiments at Chatterley House. He eventually earned a B.Sc. in 1875 and a D.Sc. from the University of London in 1877. These academic achievements provided the foundation for his later breakthroughs in electromagnetism.
Much of Lodge's research focused on the theories of James Clerk Maxwell. In 1873, Maxwell published a major treatise on electricity and magnetism. Lodge studied these works intensely starting in 1876. He became a strong advocate for the aether theory. This was a model suggesting a wave-bearing medium called the aether filled all of space. Although this theory was later deprecated, Lodge defended it for many years. He even built "whirling machines" to test the aether drag hypothesis. These machines used a rotating metal disk to try and detect the movement of the aether. He found no evidence of such drag, but his experiments were highly detailed.
Lodge made significant strides in generating and detecting electromagnetic waves. In 1887, he investigated lightning by discharging Leyden jars into copper wires. He discovered that electrical charges often take a shorter, high-resistance path across a spark gap. This research helped him understand how waves behave. In 1888, he noticed a glow along a wire at specific intervals. He interpreted this as evidence of electromagnetic waves. During a vacation in the Tyrolean Alps in July 1888, he learned that Heinrich Hertz had proven the existence of these waves. Lodge acknowledged Hertz's work in a presentation at Bath in September 1888.
In 1894, Lodge demonstrated advanced methods for transmitting and detecting radio waves. 
Lodge also contributed to the ability to select specific signals through syntonic tuning. In 1898, he received a patent for this "syntonic" method. Tuning allows a transmitter and receiver to use specific, matching frequencies. This prevents different radio signals from interfering with one another. This invention led to a major legal dispute with the Marconi Company. The dispute centered on who had priority in inventing wireless telegraphy. Eventually, the Marconi Company settled by purchasing Lodge's patent in 1912. They also gave him the honorary role of scientific adviser.
Beyond radio, Lodge's engineering talents influenced several other industries. He developed the moving boundary method to measure ion transport numbers in solutions. He also studied how electricity could disperse fog and smoke. One of his most practical inventions was the Lodge Igniter. This was an electric spark ignition system for internal combustion engines. His work in motoring was so impactful that his sons founded Lodge Bros. This company later became known as Lodge Plugs Ltd. 
In his later years, Lodge also explored the field of spiritualism. This was a subject of significant personal and public interest for him. He wrote many books on his research into life after death. One of his most famous works was titled *Raymond; or, Life and Death*, published in 1916. In this book, he detailed messages he believed came from a medium. He believed these messages were from his son, Raymond.
