He also used a technique from wired telegraphy by grounding his transmitter and receiver. These changes allowed his radio waves to travel over hills and reach much greater distances.
Marconi's journey toward discovery was shaped by a unique education and early mentors. He did not attend a formal school during his youth. Instead, his parents hired private tutors to teach him chemistry, mathematics, and physics at home. 
Because he found little support in Italy, Marconi moved to Great Britain in 1896. 
Marconi performed several famous demonstrations to prove his technology worked. In March 1897, he transmitted Morse code signals across Salisbury Plain. On May 13, 1897, he achieved a historic milestone by sending the first wireless communication over the open sea. 
Beyond his engineering work, Marconi held significant social and political roles. In 1929, King Victor Emmanuel III ennobled him as a marquess. He also served as a politician and helped set up Vatican Radio for Pope Pius XI in 1931. His life connected the world of pure physics to the world of global commerce and politics. The systems he developed moved from laboratory experiments to essential tools for military and commercial use. Today, every time we use a wireless device, we are using the principles Marconi first mastered in his attic.
