Together, they discovered neon, krypton, and xenon. Ramsay also succeeded in isolating helium. Scientists had previously observed helium in the spectrum of the sun. Ramsay's journey into science started in Glasgow, Scotland. He was born on 2 October 1852. His father, William C. Ramsay, was a civil engineer and surveyor. Ramsay attended the Glasgow Academy before studying at the University of Glasgow. He graduated in 1869 and later studied in Germany at the University of Tübingen. He earned a doctoral degree there with a thesis on toluic and nitrotoluic acids. Later in his career, he held important roles at University College, Bristol. In 1887, he became the chair of Chemistry at University College London (UCL). It was at UCL that he made his most celebrated scientific discoveries.

His scientific achievements earned him many high honors. In 1902, King Edward VII invested him as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. This happened at Buckingham Palace on 24 October 1902. In 1904, Ramsay received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He shared this prize with Lord Rayleigh. The Nobel Committee recognized him for his services in discovering the inert gaseous elements in air. In that same year, he was elected as an International Member of the United States National Academy of Sciences. He was also an International Member of the American Philosophical Society.

Beyond the laboratory, Ramsay had a significant impact on the scientific community. He served as an adviser to the Indian Institute of Science. He actually suggested Bangalore as the location for that institute. He also served as the president of the British Association from 1911 to 1912. However, not all of his ventures were successful. In 1905, he endorsed a company called the Industrial and Engineering Trust Ltd. This company claimed it could extract gold from seawater. They bought property on the English coast for a secret process. Ultimately, the company never produced any gold.

William Ramsay lived a full life before his death in 1916. He was married to Margaret Buchanan, and they had two children. Their daughter was named Catherine Elizabeth, and their son was William George. Ramsay passed away from nasal cancer on 23 July 1916. He was 63 years old at the time of his death. He died in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and was buried in Hazlemere. His legacy lives on through many names and memorials. A blue plaque at 12 Arundel Gardens in London marks his life. A school in Hazlemere and a type of grease are also named after him.
