The literacy rate is 78.52%, which is higher than the national average of 74.04%. Most residents speak Telugu or Urdu. These are also the official languages of the city. The economy relies on a mix of industry and agriculture. Nizamabad is the largest producer of rice in the state. Because of this, many rice mills operate in the Khanapur region. Nizamabad is a vital center for healthcare and transport. It is the third largest city in the state. The city is known for providing medical care to northern Telangana. It features the Government General Hospital, which is one of the largest in the state. There is also a Government Medical College, established in 2012. For transport, National Highway 44 bypasses the city. National Highway 63 also originates here, connecting to Chhattisgarh. The railway station is a convergence point for several important lines. It was even selected for the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in 2023.
Tourism offers a look into the ancient past of the region. The Nizamabad Fort is located to the southwest of the city. Rashtrakuta Kings built it around the 10th century. The Nizams later captured and rebuilt the fort. Visitors can also go to the Archaeological and Heritage Museum. It opened in October 2001 in the Tilak Garden premises. The museum displays artifacts from the Paleolithic period to the 16th-century Vijayanagara Empire. 
Modern development is changing the look of the city. Real estate has been booming for a decade. There are many new high-rise apartments and commercial complexes. The Nizamabad Urban Development Authority (NUDA) manages this growth. It oversees the city and 60 surrounding villages.
