The history of the region spans thousands of years and involves many empires. One of the earliest political formations was the Aśmaka Mahajanapada, which flourished between 700 BCE and 400 BCE. This was the only southern kingdom among the sixteen great Mahajanapadas of the Iron Age. It was a prosperous kingdom situated along the banks of the Godavari River.

In the medieval and early modern periods, different sultanates and empires held power. The Delhi Sultanate and the Bahmani Sultanate ruled the area before the Qutb Shahi dynasty was established in 1518.
The transition to modern governance involved significant political shifts and movements. In 1823, the Nizams ceded certain districts to British India through a subsidiary alliance. This reduced the territory to a landlocked princely state. After India gained independence in 1947, the Hyderabad state joined the Union of India in 1948. This occurred following a military operation known as Operation Polo. In 1956, the Hyderabad State was dissolved, and Telangana was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. However, a peasant-driven movement for a separate state began in the early 1950s. This movement continued for decades until Telangana was officially granted statehood on 2 June 2014.
