History shows that Nanga Parbat has been a difficult place to explore. The name "Nanga Parbat" comes from Sanskrit words meaning "naked mountain." This refers to the south face, which is usually without snow. Locally, it is known as Diamer or Deo Mir. These names mean "mountain of God." Early European expeditions began soon after the mountain was discovered. In 1895, Albert F. Mummery led a trip to the peak. Sadly, Mummery and two companions died while exploring the Rakhiot Face.

In the 1930s, German mountaineers became very interested in the mountain. They could not attempt Mount Everest because they lacked access to Tibet. Therefore, Nanga Parbat was the highest mountain they could reach. These early expeditions faced many hardships. In 1934, a storm trapped many climbers. Several famous German mountaineers and six Sherpas died from exhaustion and altitude sickness.

In 1937, an avalanche killed sixteen men at Camp IV. These events led to the mountain's nickname, "Killer Mountain."

He climbed the final 1,000 meters entirely alone. He did not use supplemental oxygen to help him breathe. He reached the summit very late in the evening. To survive the night, he had to bivouac, or camp, while standing upright on a narrow ledge.

He finally reached safety after 40 hours of climbing.
