About 70 million years ago, a piece of land called the Indian plate began moving north. It eventually crashed into the Eurasian plate. Because the Indian plate was thick and buoyant, it could not slide easily under Eurasia. Instead, the land pushed together and folded upward into thick sheets of rock.

This process of building mountains is called orogeny. This collision also helped thicken the land to create the high Tibetan Plateau.

The range is divided into several different parts. From south to north, there are four parallel mountain ranges. These include the Sivalik Hills, the Lower Himalayan Range, the Great Himalayas, and the Tibetan Himalayas. The Great Himalayas are the highest and sit in the middle.

In the east, the mountains become very rugged with steep, forested valleys.

In the west, the range ends at the high peak of Nanga Parbat. This peak rises over 8,000 metres above the Indus valley.

Life in the Himalayas is shaped by the high peaks and deep valleys.

About 53 million people live directly in the mountains. Many major rivers, like the Indus, the Ganges, and the Tsangpo, start near these peaks. The water from these rivers supports about 600 million people in the surrounding areas.

Because of this, some mountains are off-limits to climbers. For example, people do not climb Gangkhar Puensum or Mount Kailash. These mountains are treated with great respect as holy places. The mountains continue to influence the culture and spirit of everyone living near them.

This range spans five different countries: Nepal, India, China, Bhutan, and Pakistan. The sovereignty of parts of the range, specifically in the Kashmir region, is currently disputed among India, Pakistan, and China.

The formation of these mountains is a result of complex plate tectonics.

About 70 million years ago, the Indian continental plate began moving northward toward the Eurasian plate. As they collided, the less buoyant oceanic plate subducted, or slid under, the Eurasian plate into the asthenosphere. However, the thick and buoyant Indian continental plate could not subduct easily. Instead, the lateral compression caused the upper crust to fold into thick sheets called nappes.

This massive process of mountain building is known as orogeny.

The Himalayas consist of four distinct, parallel mountain ranges arranged from south to north. The southernmost range is the Sivalik Hills. Moving north, you find the Lower Himalayan Range. The central and highest section is the Great Himalayas.

Finally, the northernmost section is the Tibetan Himalayas. The range varies in width, measuring 350 km in the west and narrowing to 151 km in the east. The western anchor is the peak of Nanga Parbat, while the eastern end is Namcha Barwa.

Geography within the range is defined by massive peaks and deep valleys. In Nepal, the Great Himalayas contain the 8,000-metre peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. These are separated by the Kali Gandaki Gorge, which splits the range into western and eastern sections. Further east lies the Mahalangur Himal. This section contains four of the world's six highest mountains, including Mount Everest.

In the far east, the Kangchenjunga massif sits on the border of India and Nepal. This is the third-highest mountain in the world.

The mountains play a vital role in the Earth's water systems. Major rivers such as the Indus, the Ganges, and the Tsangpo–Brahmaputra all rise near the Himalayas.

The combined drainage basin of these rivers provides water for approximately 600 million people. Within the mountains themselves, about 53 million people live. The landscape is home to diverse wildlife, including yaks and red pandas.

High-altitude lakes, such as Gurudongmar Lake, also dot the landscape.

Cultural and religious significance is deeply woven into the Himalayan landscape. The name comes from the Sanskrit word Himālaya, meaning "abode of snow." Many peaks are considered sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism.

Because of this sanctity, several summits are off-limits to climbers. These include Kangchenjunga, Gangkhar Puensum, Machapuchare, Nanda Devi, and Mount Kailash. In Bhutan, the monastery of Paro Taktsang serves as a notable cultural landmark.

The collision between India and Eurasia did more than just build mountains. It also caused the crust to thicken and shorten, creating the high Tibetan Plateau. This happened because the collision dragged Eurasia's ancient volcanic mountains farther north. This process is linked to isostatic equilibrium, which is the balance between gravity pulling the crust down and the mantle pushing it up. This balance helps maintain the incredible altitude of the plateau and the surrounding peaks.
