The name K2 comes from an old survey. A man named Thomas Montgomerie labeled the peaks. He called them K1 and K2. The K stands for the Karakoram range. K2 was the second peak he found. It is a famous and grand place.

It sits in the Karakoram range. This huge peak is part of a large area of uplift. This area includes the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas. The mountain sits in two different places. Part of it is in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Another part is in the Xinjiang region of China.

It is the most prominent peak in the Karakoram. Many glaciers surround the mountain. These glaciers provide fresh water to the valleys below. This water is very important for local farming.

K2 has a very distinct shape. It looks like a steep pyramid. The mountain drops quickly in almost every direction. The north side is the steepest part of the mountain. It rises very fast from the K2 Glacier.

This steepness makes the climb very hard. The mountain is also known for its dangerous weather. K2 is located further north than Mount Everest. This means the weather is often more bad. The faces of the mountain are also very exposed. Because of this, many people call it the "Savage Mountain."

People have been trying to climb K2 for a long time. In 1856, a British team first surveyed the area. A man named Thomas Montgomerie labeled the peaks K1 and K2. The K stands for the Karakoram range. K2 did not have a common local name at that time. Some people suggest the name Chogori. This name comes from two Balti words meaning "big mountain."

Other names like Lamba Pahar have been used too. The name K2 stayed because it was easy to use. It is now even used in the Balti language.

Climbing K2 is a very big challenge. It is often called the "Mountaineers' Mountain." The first people to reach the summit were Italian climbers. Their names were Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni. They reached the top in 1954.

Most climbers try to go in July or August. These are the warmest months of the year. In January 2021, a team of Nepalese climbers did something amazing. They became the last group to climb an 8,000-meter peak in winter. This team was led by Nirmal Purja and Mingma Gyalje Sherpa.

K2 is a very special place in the world. It is much harder to climb than Mount Everest. About 800 people have reached the summit so far. However, 96 people have died while trying to climb it. This makes it one of the deadliest mountains.

The mountain is made of very old rocks. These are called K2 Gneiss. These rocks were formed millions of years ago. The mountain is a symbol of how powerful nature can be. It continues to amaze everyone who looks at it.

It is located in the northwestern Karakoram Range. This massive peak sits on the border between two regions. Part of the mountain is in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The other part lies in the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China.

It is the most prominent peak within the Karakoram. This means it has a very high degree of independence from nearby mountains. It is part of a massive area of uplift. This geological system includes the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas.

The mountain has a very distinct, steep shape. It looks like a consistent pyramid that drops quickly in almost every direction. The north side is the steepest face of the mountain. There, it rises over 3,000 meters from the K2 (Qogir) Glacier. This rise happens over only 5 kilometers of horizontal distance. In most other directions, the mountain achieves massive vertical relief very quickly. This extreme steepness makes K2 much more difficult to climb than Mount Everest. The mountain's northern location also brings more frequent inclement weather.

The geology of K2 is composed of very old metamorphic rocks. These rocks are known as K2 Gneiss. This rock is part of the Karakoram Metamorphic Complex. The Gneiss is a mixture of orthogneiss and biotite-rich paragneiss. These rocks were formed between 115 and 120 million years ago. Long ago, large bodies of magma formed in a subduction zone. This is where one tectonic plate slides under another. This magma eventually became a granitic precursor. During the Eocene Period, the collision of the Asia and Indian plates buried these rocks deep underground. The intense pressure and heat transformed them into the gneiss we see today.

K2's name comes from the Great Trigonometrical Survey of British India. In 1856, Thomas Montgomerie performed the first survey of the Karakoram. He sketched the most prominent peaks and labeled them K1 and K2. The "K" stands for the Karakoram range. While K1 was known locally as Masherbrum, K2 did not have a common local name. This might be because the mountain is so remote. It is not visible from Askole, one of the highest nearby settlements. It is only briefly seen from the end of the Baltoro Glacier. Some suggest the name Chogori, meaning "big mountain" in Balti. However, evidence for this name is scant.

Climbing K2 is a legendary and dangerous challenge. It is often called "The Savage Mountain." This nickname came from climber George Bell in 1953. He said the mountain tries to kill you. It is also known as "The Mountaineers' Mountain." The first successful summit occurred in 1954. Italian climbers Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni reached the top. They were part of an expedition led by Ardito Desio.

Most people attempt the climb during July or August. These are typically the warmest months of the year. In January 2021, a team of Nepalese climbers led by Nirmal Purja and Mingma Gyalje Sherpa reached the summit in winter. This made K2 the final eight-thousander to be climbed in winter.

K2 is known for being one of the deadliest mountains in the world. Before 2021, roughly one person died for every four people who reached the summit. Since then, about 800 people have reached the top. However, 96 people have died during attempted climbs. The mountain's faces are very exposed and dangerous. The eastern face remains unclimbed by anyone. This is partly due to unstable ice and snow formations. These hazards make the eastern side extremely difficult to navigate.

The mountain's environment is vital to the region. Glaciers near K2, such as those to the south and east, provide meltwater. This water flows into the valleys to support agriculture. It is a major part of the regional fresh-water supply. K2 stands over 4,000 meters above the glacial valley bottoms at its base. This massive height and local relief make it a unique landmark. It remains a symbol of the power and difficulty of high-altitude climbing.
